How to join grand company?

How do I join a grand company? it says I should be getting the quest at around lvl 20 but I am lvl 33 now and I still don't see the quest. I also cannot become a monk. I have pugilist 33 and lancer 15. and I don't see anyone to give me a quest to do in pugilist guild. if anyone can help me please. ive been looking around on how to do these things for hoursa and I find nothing.

It's not your character level alone, you need to play the Main Story up to and including the Ifrit trial (which is a level 20 quest hence the level requirement you're aware of), after that you'll begin a short Main Story quest chain that will get you to the point of being able to select which GC you want to join.

In order to unlock jobs you'll need to complete another couple of Main Story quests once you've joined the GC (specifically one called "Sylph Management") .. welcome to FFXIV, a game where most content is gated by the need to follow the tramlines of the Main Story, a 'sandbox' MMO it certainly is not

Yes every time I deviated from main story line I ended up lost. Look in your character log and under Main story you will see the last quest you have completed and start from there.
