at least until people start dying from the animation locks. Then you'll see the similarity with DRG :3
Hmm, now where have I seen a Staff/Sword mage class dealing damage and debuffs .. oh yes, Lord of The Rings Online's Lore-Master, with or without a pet.How do you think this style may play out for Red Mage? So far the short trailer showed some skills being most of Red Mage attacks are focused on the Sword Staff use for long range spells like Black mage and a sword skill being a "charge attack then jump back to position" skill like Dragoon's Jump Skill but with longer animation.
I know Red Mage is a staple FF job, I have one in FFXI, but this sounds kind of an unrequired extra DPS caster, to me.
Well look at the bright side, the Staff is the Sword or if you prefer the Sword is the Staff.Hmm, now where have I seen a Staff/Sword mage class dealing damage and debuffs .. oh yes, Lord of The Rings Online's Lore-Master, with or without a pet.

Why have two separate weapons and ask "if sword mage or staff mage is better" when you can have both as one.![]()

Honestly you sound quite ridiculous right now. You've lost all interest in the entire expansion because a minute long video that showcased like three whole moves weren't up to your dream of what RDM is supposed to be?Not particularly impressed with the magic dragoon gameplay choice, so far. My current biggest gripe is how the sword currently feels extremely disconnected from the way the job has classically had many viable options for both range and melee attacks, and to maximize you would need to strike a balance with both varieties of spells. As it is now, it doesn't feel like an RDM. At least, in my opinion. After being hyped for the job for so long, I've pretty much lost all interest in the expansion because of the way the job currently feels really halfhearted.

My first time seeing the video...
New expansion reveals so far have fulfilled two of my three most wanted features: underwater zone, melee/ranged hybrid job and a cool new race. Since the last one isn't happening I'll instead wish for a 2 second (or less) base GCD and keep my fingers crossed.
It's looking good and I'm excited.![]()

I always found RDM at its core to be incredibly bland, so the video at least made me interested in it for ff 14 lol. Im in the grp that woulda liked to see other classes besides rdm, but least the video makes it seem more unique than the usual "ok at all but not good at anything" shtick.
As for the video, seems like ill be Casting for its DPS phases and moving in and out of melee with Jump/repelling shot esque skills to melee for its refresh/chain build stages probably "ending" with chain spell" burst damage. Which I don't mind while I though rdm partying was boring in ff 11, the solo was nice cuz it had a borderline soothing flow to it going from "debuff"> attack > conserve etc.

Its interesting to see how the swords docks with the crystal and then turns into a staff and that'll be interesting to find out. But I wonder if such an elaborate weapon scheme is really needed? why not stick to the sword and shield? Still interested to see how the job turns out!
I'll give it a try. Even though is a very short clip, I fail to see the "high speed" combat that was advertised in the slide show. I wish I had a full skillset and some rotations in action, but they did the same with all the showcased jobs so far. Some ended up being more interesting than the preview in the end. I've never focused on a DPS class, I'm more of a tank/healer player. Hopefully I will find in this class what I'm looking for.
With this community, I'm not even surprised. Remember some days ago, people threatened SE to quit the game if they included a "jump potion". People love to act like drama queens on these boards all the time.
We've already got a sword/shield job, and i don't think RDM has ever used a shield in any incarnation. They've always been fencer type sword fighters, not knight type sword fighters. Its interesting to see how the swords docks with the crystal and then turns into a staff and that'll be interesting to find out. FFXI Red Mage can use shields, broad swords, and longswords, and not just raipiers. Granted, natural shield skill rating is lowest possible for actually having a skill, but they can use them there.
