I know this will come across as nitpicking, but I think the greater issue is, it'd be a stretch on realism. Every other Job/Class we can explain in combat without much difficulty. By contrast, a Chemist would require a stock of items, or at least ingredients, to constantly be making the materials they need to perform in a combat situation. Pockets and Bags can only hold so much, after all.
All of these can be put into lore as "because magic". Or hell, give CHM an aethyric mixing bowl that absorbs aether and creates aethyric potions of different types based on its aethyric composition and elemental affinities, and mixes them together for different effects, or some made up BS like that :P.
