Wouldn't be that hard. FFVIII has a whip for the blue mage of all things. As long as the theme/concept of the class feels right the weapon could be a myriad of things.

It could be, true, but the weapon would pretty much define the feel of the job, IMO.
Also, personally I feel that the whip would be best reserved for Beastmaster, if we ever get that job.

Black Mage and White Mage both use Staves. Scepters too, for that matter, though I doubt we'll see either using Scepters in the future. Wouldn't mind seeing a new DoM class using Scepters though.
I'd like to see Blue Mage incorporated with Beastmaster and Morpher elements to be honest, so I wouldn't be opposed to a whip.

I know they look very similar, but White Mages use Radicals and WandsA wand or radical is a short, one-handed, length of unworked wood which is used to focus aether until it manifests as a desired spell. While Black Mages use Scepters and Staffs.A scepter, cudgel, brand, or rod is a short, one-handed, length made of metal and/or bone, within which is housed a medium -- a natural stone imbued with magical properties.I got to say, a BST/BLU combination would actually be very interesting.I'd like to see Blue Mage incorporated with Beastmaster and Morpher elements to be honest, so I wouldn't be opposed to a whip.
WHT also uses canes, and crooks, which is a staff. Never saw a "radical" though.I know they look very similar, but White Mages use Radicals and WandsA wand or radical is a short, one-handed, length of unworked wood which is used to focus aether until it manifests as a desired spell. While Black Mages use Scepters and Staffs.A scepter, cudgel, brand, or rod is a short, one-handed, length made of metal and/or bone, within which is housed a medium -- a natural stone imbued with magical properties.

Well if we want to get -that- technical, I suppose we could add a class that uses a Scimitar and argue that its not a sword, cause Paladins use swords. Wait, we're doing something similar with Red Mage. Though as far as I know, no one argues that the Rapier still isn't a sword.
A little off topic, I heard an interesting rumor about adding additional roles to certain classes by using different weapons. Think Scholar and Summoner, except, say, a Summoner uses a Staff while a Scholar sticks to the book, and Scholar is no longer a job at all. There's just Summoner with a healing spec that summons faeries to help heal. Granted that's just an example and I don't think its planned. A better example would be, say, a WHM using a Scepter to switch to a DPS spec where Cure, Cure II, Cure III etc... get replaced with Water, Water II, Water III...

Yoshida moved Samurai out of tank position once before due to theme and not wanting it to be a tank, and has repeated multiple times afterwards that he thinks SAM more of a DD job - so I wouldn't be surprised to see it not be a tank.
Get ready for the obligatory "I told you so" threads.

Can we fast forward to the opening keynote?
