How is this natural? In every class based game I've played, you pick what class you want to play and... level that. Learning new skills that pertain to your particular class and growing in power in your particular class is natural.

As for these being "advanced" jobs... I've found nothing at all particularly "advanced" about the HW jobs so far. They are no more or less difficult than the rest, and I doubt red mage will be much different.

[edit] Oops. Sorry for the doublepost. Meant to just edit this in. Ah well. XD

Starting @ lv50 makes me feel like I'm playing on someone else's account. People would have been fine with the job starting @30 because that was the expectation, which will now be raised going forward. A very poor decision if you ask me, but not as big of an impact at first glance. Those who wish to 'raise' their RDM, in a sense can still take the job through PoTD and early content before going into 50+ stuff, but it would seem SE might be done with gated content. The only other thing I am sad about are no 30-50 job quests

That being said, it is a minor drawback in comparison to what seems like will be a very fun job to play. I can't tell you how school-girl giddy I am right now that my two loves of magic casting and swordplay without it being a tank is coming to us soon! DPS is truly the right decision for this job as it gives it the flexibility it needs to satisfy the RDM fans. Me being one of them.

Way too soon to add it as a main. I will always be a healer, but anything I take to 50+ I take very seriously. But before I can solidify RDM in something I will actually invest time into, I need to actually play it but they at least got me to want to try it.

Well looks like I am switching my Main Job to Red Mage in 4.0.

If there is anything I love more than a Gunblade Job or a Gun Job it is a Job that can use both Sword and Magic because that is my original favorite Job that I have stuck with since my childhood.

Not to mention that Red Mage Relic weapon.

Still think starting at level 50 maybe a bit much. Players will need to go test the 50 levels of skills to know what they do and how Red Mage functions while dealing with a new Job mechanics.

Conversely, in literally every class based game I've ever played, especially with ones where you can have multiple jobs unlocked per character, you're never given access to the full spread from the word go. In some games, you need to progress a certain point past the story to unlock new jobs, in some, you need to spend some time as one or more different classes to unlock another class, and in still others, you need to find drops in order to actually unlock a job. So, yes, it very much feels fair to me.

None of the above are from mobile games, either, I'm talking about full games.

Not much of a fan personally. I'm more annoyed that weapon play is of secondary importance, as I've always considered magic to be the back up of the red mage rather than the other way around. That vpose is win though.

I never played FF 11 so sorry if this is a dumb question as I don't know what they were like in that game, but is the red mage going to be like a DPS with some healing abilities since that's what they do in FF series and what kind of spells would they cast?

Still only speculation as far what abilities it is going to have, but the video is a strong indication that the job will play as a ranged caster/melee DPS hybrid. Albeit might lean more towards casting. It is still a mage class.

As far as FFXI goes, what you see in this video is more along the lines of how a lot of people wanted RDM to be played. But in groups you were told to keep your toothpick at bay, and just cast. Swordplay was mostly used when you soloed content. During the prime of its days, RDM was so busy casting that you didn't have time to melee anyway. Towards the end of my time it was nothing more than a refresh/haste bot.

No heals casted in the video as the Miqo'te RDM was too busy kicking ass

I feel the same way. From what we've been shown it seems spamming nuke combos is the core of the job's gameplay, with using the weapon being a mere gimmick. Which is generally not how spellblades/magic swordsmen work; the magic is often used in tandem with the sword or as back-up to it, not the other way around.

The ranged label also worries me, because it means it shares gear with black mage (all those flowing robes instead of stuff you would expect a front-line mage to wear). The AF's aesthetic is nice, and they chose the right weapon. The rest just doesn't look right. I still want to see the ability list, see the mechanics behind the job and test it out, but I'm not impressed.

    I won't deny it's still a step above refresh-botting, though.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

I don't understand why people are throwing a fit at the job potentially being at level 50. We're in the second expansion pack soon, yet you want to go back to ARR areas and run butt old dungeons yet again? Or are you just going to spam Palace of the Dead like with everything else?

I disagree with the immediate naysaying over how the job plays, when we've only seen a couple of actions, and had no in-depth look nor chance to play it yet. Personally, I thought the first video showed a good blend of long-range and close-range skills.

What I do agree with though is worry about the gear available to it clashing with the Job's own aesthetic. One can hope that with the coming system expansions, they'll make the glamour system more versatile, or include more Job-specific equipment. Or both.
