Oh that is nice looking, that cauldron is the bomb.
Final Fantasy Tactics the chemist job can equip daggers and guns.
So they could go either of those routes depending on if they want them to need to be close to DPS or not. Guns are more likely since I doubt they'd shake things up that much with a melee healer... though I feel like most healers tend to think they are melee jobs these days.
Also a more obvious answer could just be bottles.
Considering that Alchemy and Chemistry are different, I'd love to think Chemist would be a class in the game. Apothecary in its name sounds just as fine, even. Throwing potions and the like would be neat.
Personally love the two-handed gun idea even if Machinist has some abilities that allow them to briefly yield big two-handed arms.
They'd throw their potions directly with different mixes. Like Plague Knight from Shovel Knight... or you know, Chemist with Throw Potion in FFT or Chemist in FF5 using the Mix command on enemies to do things like instant death or inflict status ailment etc.
So their weapon would be vial or beaker or flask or something. Flasks made out of their own aether, such that they're solid and affect the mixture within. Maybe add cast times for the mixing :3c

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore
A bottomless bag with an endless amount of flasks ready to be thrown to your friends heads of course

Has anyone suggested the Magun from FF:Unlimited yet?
It wouldn't be redundant at all. One's specialised in crafting, the other is specialised in combat. Aside from being a combat job in other Final Fantasy titles, it's a trope in other JRPG's as well. Octopath Traveler has them in the form of 'Apothecary'. They mix potions in battle to heal or deal damage and they wield an axe as their weapon of choice. Xenoblade Chronicles has character that acts as a 'chemist' who shoots healing projectiles at her allies and damaging bullets at her enemies. In short, there's plenty of ways in which a chemist based job could be implemented.I know what they were meaning. Secondly: I Highly, HIGHLY doubt we'll ever get a 'chemist' battle job on top of having an alchemist crafting job. That would just be ridiculously redundant. Hence why I said the only weapon a 'chemist' will have is an Alembic. Sorry to burst bubbles.
Earlier iterations would = Guns and Daggers. However since daggers and guns already belong to Ninja's and Machinists i think Chemist would have Vials as a weapon - which they throw.
