Even if SE decided not to shut down the servers, the electric power company announced that there will be planned power outtages in the next days. While the planned power cuts are actually not happening at the moment and have been delayed/canceled (since, they say, the shortage of power has been less serious than initially expected, which lights a bit of hope in the possibility that the power crisis will be mitigated soon enugh to reopen the servers fairly quickly), it's not guaranteed that it will continue like that. They have been very clear about that multiple press conferences today.
On top of that, if the stress on the power grid were to become high, there might be unexpected power outtages.

Not only there's the necessity of saving energy, but exposing the servers to repeated power outtages might raise the risk of damaging the data. Moreover, they would have to shut the servers down periodically in any case if the planned power cuts were to be actually put in action.

In short words, there are several reasons, and there really was no other option. It's that simple.

No. Because their servers would be in Japan where there was no natural disaster...In this case, there was. Get it? This isn't a matter of SE being selfish or cutting corners. This is a matter of safety and security and right now, the Japanese have little of either. Try and think of that. People need to preserve food, they need health care, and the state of Japans power is in jeopardy. A game server is unimportant in comparison. It is a matter of responsibility. I don't think you realize how much money SE is losing by doing this but they understand this. They didn't take this decision lightly. Sorry SE didn't keep their servers running for a buck while the rest of the country pays for it just so that people like you could enjoy themselves and forget about such a catastrophe. Besides, with the rolling black outs, the servers would be down constantly.

Well there are more problems, another component of power plant blew up (160north of tokyo ? correct me) and they have really hard time there. :P Thats enough to suspend the game servers when 2mil of jap. people are out of electricity.
What matters the worst is radiation leak, thats.... I am not calm with this but anyway its in news.

Even SE is more worried about other things than FF now.
I just wish for no more blasts in power plant and for now
I dont care about the game running or not.

    Interesting arguments.

It appears the general feeling is that the power saved from shutting down the servers is the benefit here. However, SE can donate the money they make from FFXI (not XIV since it's free) which would benefit more I think. The critical infrastructure can be kept alive through rolling power outages with external power sources for those revenue generating operations.

I believe the power saved from stopping everyone in Japan from playing the game is much more significant and is a good idea although it is a bit big brotherish.

From a business stand point, it is a very good decision as I believe keeping the servers up through this ordeal will have ended this game for the following reasons:
    1) Japanese are compassionate and patriotic people. Not showing support in this time of crisis would have probably agitated the Japanese player base.
    2) Japanese players are probably not playing anyway and keeping the servers will seem like the Foreign players are at an advantage so those Japanese players probably won't return. Since most of the loyal following is from Japan, this wouldn't make sense.
    3) Shutting down the servers is a "fair" action that affects all players.

Also, for all those that argue there are selfish people and people are this and that. This is true but keep in mind it's people that work for companies like SE and people that are owners/investors.

Although the outage is scheduled to last a week, the power cuts are due to continue for months; Tepco has asked for business cooperation in turning off such superfluous fixtures as neon signage, but has so far not suggested anyone inconvenience customers or cripple their own business.

Data centres in any case would normally have their own backup generators, and so should be unaffected even by cuts.

In light of the fact that central Tokyo is exempt from the power cuts and will in all probability not see any change in the operation of all its energy guzzling pachinko parlours, cavernous shopping centres, amusement facilities and so on, the decision to inconvenience customers the world over with a week long server outage of machines with limited power requirements has a definite ring of Square Enix quality about it.
A little something from a website that keeps track of general news and events coming from japan.

Also for the person that mentioned 25%-50% of power loss from the 6 reactors that shut down. Can you explain where you got that from? Japan has close to 60 reactors.. 6 reactors sounds a lot less than 25%-50%.

I got it from BBC news, and it was a reflection of total power loss counting knockouts from the quake, tsunami, and automatic shutdowns. In an earthquake, the reactors all automatically shut down (and reactors account for about 1/3 of Japans electric output).

This number also accounts for shutdowns of hydro electric, etc. If I remember correctly, it was a guesstimate by international experts, and not based on any announced data from Japan, but rather a number reflecting what would be expected in a disaster of this magnitude.

My apologies if I said or made it seem like that much power was lost from just the damaged reactors.

As that is also an old number, I can only assume that some shutdowns have been canceled after structural checks, etc., but I do not know if any of the nuclear reactors are back online yet, given the number of aftershocks.

You know this OP's shelfishness angers me so much I can't even think of a logical comeback so i'll keep it simple. Would you be worrying about a goddamn game had it been your friends/family stuck in the quake?? What's the point of your stupid post anyway?? Do you enjoy getting a rise out of people who actually give a damn?? I'm pretty sure at a time like this they could give a less damn about the game and their business and want their staff to focus their time and energy on helping their loved ones, mourn their losses and do whatever they can to contribute to help relieve Japan of this utterly horrible disaster. Also if anyone read the new in the last couple of hours?? There was another nuclear plant explosion. I would be surprised if they get the severs up by april at all. Anyway you really need to get a life and quit worrying about how SE runs their business and the damn game but if you can't do that then gtfo. Kudos.
