I don't know if you've ever played a Final Fantasy game before, but Red Mage is all about physical offense, black magic, and white magic. They're not just a stabby Rapier job with a fancy outfit.

Pretty much, that's literally their entire gimmick through the series too using low tier magic spells and iirc they don't learn either -aga or aja spells depending on the game.

I won't even count FFXI, I can hardly see balance in that game.

You can't just dismiss it because you don't like it FFXI is a MMO with raise present in the Red Mage's spell list, lol. Balanced or not
