Diadem had potential but was botched - maybe they can fix it, they haven't said much about what they plan to do so I'm not sure they understand why it didn't work in the first place.

Yeah, I gotta agree. Each expansion offered two or three endgame activities that provided top-notch gear - and since most of those expansions had the same level cap of 75, by the time they got to Wings of the Goddess there were nearly a dozen different endgame activities that were all providing loot that was still relevant to the game.

While this game may never see that, I don't think it'd be out of the question to diversify a bit, change up the formula so that trial weapon -> early raids -> supplement with tome gear -> later raids isn't the only way to gear to max.
