Eorzea seems nice... how much damage did the Calamity do?

I've been playing FF14 on and off since it launched, but something has been bugging me.

How much damage did the Calamity cause?

I know Coerthas seems to be suffering from a little ice age because of it, but after watching the End of an Era video I'd imagine landscapes reshaped or outright obliterated.

Seeing as I never played 1.0. Was there some defenses or spells explained in that version to absorb much of the incoming death?

Short version: The story in the binding coil answers it somewhat. There's also a 2nd part of the end of an era video on the official FFXIV channel that shows what happens if you haven't seen it. The entire video is called Flames of Truth. (Was actually in the game in BCoB after beating a certain fight but they uploaded it later around when HW came out).
