Unable to download Patch Files after buying Heavensward

I came back to the game the other day, reinstalled over the weekend and got to play a few hours Sunday. I bought Heavensward yesterday and tried to download the necessary update files yesterday but ran into the "unable to download patch files" error.



This is the file it gets stuck on every time....



I spent a few hours searching last night and found all sorts of ridiculous posts about VPNs, and odd editing of system files. Most of the posts go unfixed and the ones that do, well the fixes, don't even make sense lol. I admittedly did try the VPN nonsense this morning, the "Cyberghost" software I came across numerous times in posts however that did not result in any success.

Why was I able to install the game and patch the game this weekend but am no longer able to last night and this morning?

I've disabled firewalls and antivirus, I've reinstalled the game from scratch, I've run all .exes as admin, and I've rebooted my PC. Help?

I ant update the game and neither can other people. I think they are still having issues.

Figured I'd update this as I go. I tried downloading the entire game again at work (different PC and ISP than what I am using at home) and still ran into this same issue. The entire steam download finished and it made it through several patch files before hitting me with the "unable to download patch files" error again. Two different PCs in two different buildings on two different ISP's - I got nothing lol.


I did lose one of the error codes though, down to just the first 2 for what it is worth - end result is still no downloading and no playing.

Another update to any other poor souls who end up here: I tried to download the patch again last night with no luck. Same errors on the same file at the same spot in the download. I reluctantly downloaded the Cyberghost VPN software. With the VPN running I was able to download the problem patch. After I finished downloading the problem file, "2015.10.27" I hit cancel on the download, turned off the VPN, and resumed downloading on my normal connection with no more issues.

I haven't a clue what in the world using the VPN fixed but considering I could download 30gb before the problem file and the remaining 3gb after said file, I can't help but feel this problem is not on my end.

Don't worry it isn't you, a lot of different people with different IPs and such are all having this issue right now. No one knows exactly what's causing it but VPN help and DNS switching seems to be the primary two ways to fix it. One guy had it work by transferring the working data from one PS4 to one that was getting the three separate error codes, patched over it just fine on the 2nd PS4. But yeah this has been an issue for a damn long time apparently, and it seems to be cropping up a lot more frequently in the past month or so since your thread isn't the only one also talking about it. TBH I doubt they will be able to fix it until they update their launcher which most people are pointing the issues towards. It's been going on for almost 2 years it seems based on old reddit posts and GFaqs stuff I looked up and saw. Utterly horrible we're having to deal with it by jumping through hoops.

so basically its a case of you cant download the content so you cant play and the money is wasted until someone gets off their ass and fixes it? because I cant download Heavensward either, and I am pissed.

Um, so it would seem >.< . It's awkward that this has been an issue dating as far back as 2014 (found countless threads when trying to troubleshoot) and it continues to persist. That said if you happen to be on PC I'm going to join the others in suggesting the Cyberghost workaround. I had to use it again today on my girlfriend's PC and we once again managed to get the files downloaded and the game running. IT absolutely is unacceptable that people need to find workarounds and third party software to get around this issue - but alas - if you are looking to just get back in game ASAP:

1: Download Cyberghost
2: Install it
3: Click the "Surf anonymously" option
4: Once it connects (if you are using the free version like i did, you will need to wait a few moments until you get a spot), go ahead and start the FFXIV launcher
5: Sign in and begin your download.
6: Once your download is complete, close the FFXIV launcher and close Cyberghost (at this point you may want to turn off Cyberghost's "launch on system start" option in its settings or just uninstall it so it doesn't bug you again lol)
7: Launch FFXIV and enjoy
