Question about fishing

My bait is lvl for ocean fishing. i'm at Limsa lower docks, going for the lvl 7 to mooch.
3 out of 5 i get fish lvl 4 and under. 2 out of 5 i get lvl 6 fish. There is a possible lvl 9 fish which never showed up.

If i can not get the fish i want, i will stop fishing for it..

In general:
Some fish can only be caught using certain bait(s).
Some fish can only be caught at certain time of day (Eorzean Time).
Some fish can only be caught in certain weather.
And just about all fish have a minimum amount of Gathering needed to catch them. (And if you want HQ fish you will of course need as much Perception rating as possible.)

In your case I take it you are after Harbor Herring. This fish is easiest to catch using Pill Bugs as bait. Best chances are middle of the day in clear weather, but it can be caught at any time and any weather.


My own experience is that there seems to be a lowered chance to catch a fish until you have caught a fish of that type at least once - but I don't really have enough data to verify that theory.


There are several sites out on the 'Net where you can see what is required to catch a certain type of fish - just google a bit.

Fishing in ffxiv is very rng. The bait can be specific to certain fish, but the level of that bait doesnt coincide with the level of the fish you can catch with it. You just have to keep at it.

Imho, this is one of the best sites to find what bait to use for certain fish, where to catch, what time of day, weather, ect...
