And we're not paying to test it. We're getting billed after we've had a flavor of it and decide if it's good for us or not. I'm sick and tired of "beta" being such a hot word to use.
To say it's a beta excuses it for what it really is: A game that can never live up to its full potential without a completely replaced client-server application.
If we were actually testing 2.0, then we could call it a beta. What we have now doesn't really have a name for it. It's never been done before as far as I know. But I'd still say we were testing concepts for the future direction of the game.

We're not testing anything. We're playing a game that's version 1.0 and is going to become 2.0 in the future. I know that this doesn't seem too far away from thinking it's beta to 1.0, but this is simply not the case. We're not testing anything, this is live content. They're slowly changing the game in its current version to be as they will make it for 2.0. In the meantime, they will get our feedback, this much is true, but I sincerely doubt they'll close the lines of communication as soon as 2.0 is released. To say it's a beta excuses it for what it really is: A game that can never live up to its full potential without a completely replaced client-server application.

Moreover, there are those other unique things concerning the 7th Umbral Era that we're all tired of enumerating over and over.

Who's saying they're closing down communication as soon as 2.0 is released? Not me. Not anyone else. Why are you imagining problems?
I'm just saying they are testing out concepts that will be used in 2.0, seeing how we react to it, if there are any balance issues or exploits. That stuff goes on all the time in normal MMOs. It's just 1.0 is getting thrown away, that's the only difference, so whatever they do now is only an approximation, and not the "real thing." There's really no name for what the last year of 1.0 is. But "beta" is not it.

Should've read it with a calm tone, because it was completely calmly written and... rereading what I wrote, it was calm. Redundancy! \o/ And lolinhaler.Calm down. Take a shot of your inhaler if you have to. Breathe.

I'm not imagining any problems. I was using the current lines of communication as the only measurement of this being a beta. They're not being closed once 2.0 hits, which you agree will be the case.
Actually, it won't be a complete "scrap" as you make it out to be. It won't be a totally new game. It'll be a changed game. The things that will change will be: maps, server structure, some story aspects, and UI--as well as the addition of a lot of content and fixes to many problems we have. These things will change abruptly from the time when the game is closed again for a period then reopened for 2.0.
The core of the game, along with all the changes coming in gradually, will carry through to the next version. This is the key point most people miss (I'm not sure if you're included, as it seems we mostly agree).
