Not worth the time or effort - Some people simply don't want to socialize with people that think forced socialization is a normal thing =P
"not worth the time or effort" Thats completely fine but then you shouldnt quote me and assume/say that Im forcing socialization since I already stated that Im a solo player. I also agree with some suggestions that were made but certainly not everything. If you think hiding someones character is a option that we need in a MMORPG Im just hoping you arent serious.

Won't it benefit RMT as well though? Like their Ekasadasdhhgasd HGasdadsjahd names won't pop up in any search at all.

Who wants to search them? We want to get away from them. Incognito idea is good. I like it.
I could use and appreciate this.

That sounds like a great idea for RMT bots.
Ultimately, everything that you do on FF XIV is public information. Nobody can go through your chat logs but the GMs and your flist is private by default, but you don't even need the game to tell if someone has been online or not just Lodestone.
While it has its merits, if OP's idea gets off the ground, for some of us it would do more harm than good in terms of reducing new rapport-formation. I assume that most people make most of their in-game friends in the game (in my case, all), occasionally by looking up someone you were friendly with earlier and /tell-ing them ... if a new behavior arises that jeopardizes this it would be quite a magnificent loss. ;_;
Think of it like how Facebook gradually shifted its mission away from meeting new people and has now become solely about organizing existing relations. That would be incredibly unhealthy for a game like this.
1st paragraph: This is true for some. But the user would have to be aware of this ahead of time.I assume that most people make most of their in-game friends in the game (in my case, all), occasionally by looking up someone you were friendly with earlier and /tell-ing them ... if a new behavior arises that jeopardizes this it would be quite a magnificent loss. ;_;

2nd paragraph: Didn't they bump the security because bad things were happening? PS4 and PS3 PSNs have many privacy settings to prevent people from getting to you. Including an "Incognito" mode. I get what you're saying, but options like these are made because of trolling, spam etc.
But if you'd met them earlier, you could /tell them regardless of whether they were incognito or not. Of course, if they're withholding their search info you wouldn't know if they were online or not until you tried, but a "/tell <Friend's Name> Hey, you around?" would get you that information as easily as a search would. You just wouldn't know where they're at unless they tell you.While it has its merits, if OP's idea gets off the ground, for some of us it would do more harm than good in terms of reducing new rapport-formation. And if it was somebody you didn't know, you wouldn't be able to find out about them by searching for everyone of a certain class in a certain region, or whatever.
Perhaps not, since SE leaves a lot of pretty basic features out, yet just about every other game has it.
