    Making Money!

So far the only way I am getting money is doing quests/leves and selling crystals.

I am planning to start DoH/DoL but have no idea wich to pick. What I am looking @ is something that will get me decent money and sells quickly.

In most MMO's I would pick Alchemy, the profit is small, but you can make tons of pots and they sell fairly quickly. (I am not saying I am leaning towords alchemy in this game too).

Crafting a hi grade item and getting the HQ version could make u a very rich guy, but thats prolly not me (atleast for now)

So guys, where do u think I should start?

i have just started crafting and gathering. i find if you get your own mats as much as possible and make and sell low level gear it sells quick and easy. ie having goldsmith and blacksmith below level 15 i made brass head knifes brass knuckles. iron war axes and sell them for 25k - 30k which i think is a fair price for me and a buyer (must be they sell like hot cakes) i have sold over 400k of thise in 3 weeks.

some1 will probally know a better way. but this works for me

What I have shown you is reality. What you remember, that is the illusion.

It doesn't really matter what you pick since all the crafts have their niche. Make sure you take up a relevant gathering class for it too (ie: Botanist for Carpenter, Miner for blacksmith, etc).

As long as you sell things at a reasonable price, you can make some significant profits and help out fellow newbies. A good rule of thumb is to check out Mooglebox.com to see if there's any NPCs that sell what you're planning to make, and price below them. I try to sell items for 1k x the required equip level, so a level 10 gear for 10k, but you can try selling for a lower/higher amount depending on how demand and what you think is a fair price. Some items are more difficult to get ahold of the materials for, so I charge more for them.

As far as what craft to pick, make it something that will benefit whatever battle class you plan on playing. Right now, Alchemy, Cooking, and Goldsmithing are a little lacking because they are relying on revamps that are coming next patch, so I'd say to avoid those for the time being. Actually, I'd still get Alchemy to 10 just for Preserve since it's a really useful ability =P

After checking the forums a bit I read some ppl saying "get this to lvl10 for x ability, that to lvl 12 for y ability". So other than the "Preserve", anything else I should try and get before working on my main craft?

I also should avoid Cooking, Alchemy and Goldsmithing until next patch, anything else I should look for or avoid?

    Any tips are welcomed

I'll say level all to 10 and pick what you like after.
Blacksmith, Alchemy, Carpenter, Leather should have what you need for a while though.

    What Tymora said.

If you have the time, leveling all the crafting classes to 10 is ideal because it gives you a great number of abilities with varying uses. If you don't want to spend that much time on other crafting classes, Alchemist's Preserve is easily the best out of the level 10 ones, followed by the Blacksmith and Carpenter ones, as suggested. These abilities will make leveling up a lot easier as they can help reduce the difficulty of synths.

Preserve makes the next 3 or 4 actions (depending on what you are making) always have a white orb. White orb maximizes your success rate with actions.

Blacksmith's Maker's Muse makes the next 3 or 4 actions have increased success with "Standard Synthesis". Since it's the action that succeeds the most often and the one you will be using the most, having a higher chance of success helps.

Carpenter's Tender Touch reduces the amount of durability you lose for the next 3 or 4 actions. It's useful for higher level recipes.

Tymora also suggested Leatherworker's Fulfillment, which increases the chance of success for the next 3 or 4 actions. It's nice as well, but it doesn't seem to help as much as Maker's Muse or the other specialized success boosts do.

Also, don't forget to use crafting gear. Try to find a balance of Craftsmanship, Magical Craftsmanship, and Control. Gear and keeping your tools up to date will make a dramatic difference in the difficulty of recipes.

For craftsmanship, recipes are currently split between the 2 types in families (share parts of the names). An relatively easy way to tell the difference is to make it once with main hand and once with off hand tool. If the recipe level is somewhat higher than you are (ball park number of +3), the difference in difficulty should be noticeable. Decide which is easier and use that for all other similar recipes.

E.g. Gems, Rings are magic craftsmanship.

A good ballpark number to estimate the craftsmanship value you need is to take the recipe level and multiply by 2. If you have spare equipment slots, use them to boost control. Food can be used to adjust it a little as well.

In terms of making money, I'd have to vote botany, especially starting out. You can get mats for Carpenter and sell the rest. On Besaid, maple sap sells 1k a pop, and I've gotten a stack and a half logging in Gridania (grades 1 and 2) for 1-1.5 hours. Also get maple logs, which you can either craft or sell.

Looking long-term, I'd have to steer you towards armorer, leather(DoW)/weaver(DoM), and Blacksmith(DoW)/Carpenter(Lancer/some DoM) for materia purposes. ^-^ Leveling-wise, leves are prooobably the best way to go right now, just pick the ones that you turn in in the city or at the first camp.

Gathering can bring in some great money, and save you money if you're hoping to grind crafts. Like Este suggested, each craft has gathering classes that work well for it. So Carp --> Botany; Culinary --> Botany (Harvesting, which is your off-hand gathering tool at special Harvesting nodes); Blacksmith/Armorer --> Mining; Goldsmith --> Quarrying (mining's off-hand gathering tool at special Quarrying nodes); etc.

So like Este suggested -- that dude is smart -- I'd suggest choosing which craft you want to level first, and then level the attendant gathering job.

There are a few exceptions that are noteworthy. For example, dyes -- which are used in pretty much every class -- you can get from secondary/off-hand gathering nodes from all classes. For example, red dye can be obtained from Quarrying nodes around Limsa Lominsa. Some dyes sell really well right now, since dyes effect stats. But that's going away in the next patch. So you can use it to make some money now, but it will be going away soon.
