Although I would like this to be an option, I gotta say that players should really pay attention to their gear anyway. I mean unless you have been constantly grinding dungeons/trials your gear never be in such urgent need to be repaired by another player anyway (at least in an instance environment). I'd still welcome it but I just hope it doesn't make some players be lazy and think there will be someone else to repair if they themself don't.
Yoshi's answer to deter possible laziness from happening? That's rubbish. I'd still level everything regardless and I'd happily repair anyone's gear for free during a run if it gets to the point of breaking because of a string of wipes. Don't see those much now except in Rabanastre, the odd duck, or whatever extreme primal mentor roulette tosses me in, but opening days for content, of course that's going to happen. Brand new fight, making progress, and getting close to clearing? That's good. Someone says "Oh, all my stuff just broke. Sorry and good luck." after the last wipe and they leave which opens the door to a domino effect of everyone leaving and party disband? That's bad. I have lost count on the number of times a run ends just because of a whoops, lost all my stats.
I would rather SE increase the penalty for having broken gear to encourage players to better maintain their equipment in the first place. I didn't level all of my crafters to 60+ so I could babysit someone who sat next to a repair NPC for 20 minutes while waiting for their dungeon queue, but then complain about broken equipment part way into the instance. It sounds like a nice QoL change on paper, but to me it's just doubling down on people's inattentiveness/laziness.
I'm not even sure how well this would work anyway. If SE does add it the person requesting the meld would need to have dark matter on them (just like melds used to work), but if they can't be bothered to maintain their equipment with a repair NPC I can't imagine them having the wherewithal to maintain a stack of dark matter either. Net gain: exactly dick.
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.
This would be good to bring back, best way to make it work is adjustable amount of gil to do repairs for others normally with all gil going to the repairer but in duties a set amount of gil that doesn't go to the repairer should be spent. Dark matter needed to be given alongside the gil too.
It would discourage repairing in dungeons but allow it if needed, no cross server gil problems and everyones happy.
Given that you can right click and request someone else to meld your materia, I see no reason why they couldn't add in one more option for Request Repair. I mean, it should be an even easier thing considering there's less involved than in melding. Just like with melding it wouldn't work if the repairer's crafters weren't high enough for the gear, but unlike melding it obviously wouldn't require materia. Just the required number of Dark Matter of the appropriate tier(s), plus the option to tip of course.
I actually kinda like this feature, especially if you can repair it beyond 100%. Another way to perform a random act of kindness.
"Oh no my weapon broke"

"Whoa thanks dude!"
Now get back in there soldier!

I support this idea.
It would be good if the player requesting the mend didn't have to carry the Dark Matter but a fee was automatically taken by the game, like the mender in other words.
A set fee would also stop any potential abuse by crafters demanding absurd amounts of gil (somebody would do it) and holding the group to ransom.
As to whether the fee should go to the crafter or the game, I wouldn't care personally. I'd just like the chance to do a favour now and then.
How about, the lower your gear goes (say make 50% the threshold at which it starts, for every 1% durability you lose, you lose 2% visibility, including hotbars, which at 0% visibility become scrambled and keybinds randomised so you can't even muscle memory it) the darker your screen becomes until when it hits 0%, the game goes completely black (and this will apply for the rest of the duty until the gear is repaired. If you discard it to try and get round that penalty, well you're screwed for the rest of the duty). Plus a visibility 0% debuff will appear on their character so other players know to kick? And if they get kicked with that debuff they get a 30 minute long SE account wide ban from all instanced duty? (when people say they want tougher penalties, I'm always able to find the most elaborate and brutal penalty).
However that being said, even if this harsher penalty were to be added, I would still like the ability to repair others gear.
Game, make it a gil sink.
White Mage ~ Scholar ~ PaladinBoi if you got kicked for the same thing in over 20 duties I strongly suggest you think hard on whatever the hell it is you're doing
As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.
Repairing 1000 items that belong to someone other than yourself will unlock the following achievement: The Fixer Upper!
