    Gathering Job Idea: Carver

    Basically what the job would be is something akin to the Desynthesis skill. A passive skill that is taken on as a job.

    What it would do is allow players to carve things from enemies you kill(Think Monster Hunter!) as a way to get extra and sometimes exclusive monster mats. Depending on the enemy you won't be able to carve of course.. No carving people(that means Lalas too. Don't even think about it. No beastmen either)... Or carving Nidhogg because he disappears.

    A quick example: You kill the Neverreap boss, the Wakkwhatsit and carve scales or teeth from it before it disappears. Or you kill a bomb and carve off a finger. Players can only get 1 extra thing per monster.

    The level of the class decides a HQ carve or not. Like an i240 desynth skill, an i240 craft skill should guarantee a success and a HQ carve from say, a lv25 antelope.


    How can it be done?
    I was thinking of adding a knife item that players can put into the Off-Hand slot. I know PLDs have shields... so I'm thinking of a solution for that right now x_x. although it doesn't really neeeed to be stuck to an Off-Hand..

    Devs can increase the amount of time a body is left on the ground and make it go away immediately after using it. To prevent trolling/hoarding, enemies could be carved regardless of if you participated or not.

    In a sense it's already in the game. We have an automated system drop monster items into our bags. Carving would actually be more lore appropriate(even though we can kill 1,000 antelope in the Shroud and know one cares). Because we are trying to get the most out of the animal we killed.

    This is wholey unnecessary as monster drops are already used in crafting (leatherworker as Wolf_Heartnet pointed out). It is also a "gathering" skill that requires battle content completely in order to function, and the separation needs to be there as DoL-DoH/DoW-DoM are two different demographics.

    Wakkwhatsit drops badass fish scale - leatherworker uses this in crafts
    Bomb drops bomb finger - alchemist uses this in a potion

    Theres your examples put into the game with no development resources put into a new system

    Can work, if automated loot get turned off for every other class. Because what will be the point to bring a class for something every other class can already do?

    Also, DoL classes are no fighters. He would need a party that is willing to give him a party slot.

    I think I worded my OP the wrong way maybe. The Carver isn't supposed to be an actual *job*. But like a skill. Like Desythesis. A skill that is leveled up through repitition. Not an actual gathering *job* like Fisher or Miner. But a thing on the side.

    I know the items drop normally. But the point of leveling the passive skill would be to guarantee a mat. And if your skill is high enough that mat would be HQ. It's meant for extra mats. Sure you can farm antelope now but you may never get the horn you need. Or a HQ one for that matter

    There was a concept similarish in 1.x - the Sentinel subdiscipline. Of course, that had skills to justify it being a class...

    Probably the greatest problem I can think of is that it's going to be required to get the cool new materials. Want that chocobo claw to craft the thing you need for the current relic step? Hope you have carver levelled up sufficiently! Or, of course, even worse - the demichoco demimateria that you need to get to affix to the relic or whatever? Yeah, you can only get it by desynthesizing that chocobo claw you got from carving a chocobo up.
