    Moenbryda

Hello! So, I witnessed the conclusion of Moenbryda's story last night, and it left me pretty confused. The whole point of everything up to it was this device she made to gather aether from corrupted crystals. And it worked! She tested it! So, why on earth, at the end, did we not use it? It's lying there, on the floor, CHARGED unless I misunderstood, when she makes her decision. I have to be missing something, because it makes no sense to me.

But you did use it. The problem was
the fact your Blessing of Light was sealed by Midgardsormr earlier (at the end of Keeper of the Lake) and thus you could not draw from the Crystals to summon the Blade of Light at will to deliver the final coup di grace to Nabrieles. Hence Moen sacrificed herself by using her own lifeforce (that is, her own body's aether) to power it instead. The device actually did it's job, the problem was gaining the enormous amount of aether to power it. Realizing the auracite was not going to hold the Ascian for long, desperate times called for desperate measures, and she could see no other source of aether other than her own life, which she willingly did.

But as DJMau said, keep playing, it will all become apparent soon enough -
sadly it will not be the last time you see Scions sacrifice themselves like that either

I appreciate the input, but unless I'm mistaken, we used the tablet, not her device. Her device was laying on the ground the whole time. There's even a shot of it next to her.

Aerish mostly has the right of it - the device she created is meant to function somewhat similarly to how Tupsimati does. Tupsimati, however, is by far the more powerful so that's why the WoL uses it.

As for the device itself - I went back a couple scenes before to when you're testing it on corrupt crystals, and while she does note that it was successful in drawing aether, it was only a small amount ("Enough to make it interesting") and she was ready to refine it further with the intent that it would hold enough aether for the needs of the Scions.

In other words, it wasn't fully charged at all and was thus not used at all - likely it didn't hold near enough aether to be of any kind of help.

I get the feeling her device was more of the first steps to replicating Tupsimati's aether drawing abilities (although, I'm not sure how many Scions actually knew it could do that. Minfilia didn't after all). Basically, an early prototype no where near able to do what we need it to without more testing and refinement.

The tablet and the device function effectively the same. Infact, Tupsimati is probably a fair bit stronger. They actually say they aren't sure if it will be enough though since they have no idea of the Aetheric density of an Ascian soul so cant be sure exactly how much Aether is needed to destroy the soul.

Moenbryda realised that the amount of Aether being channelled wasn't sufficient and so, knowing that death causes a powerful release of Aether, gave her life to power the attack, amplifying the power to the point that it destroyed the soul of Nabriales. Using the Device wouldn't have helped much.

That said, in principle the Device probably works, it just needs more refining or stronger localised Aetheric energies to draw upon to work.

Or it's a "proof of concept" device. It can't hold the amount required to be of any use in that instance, nor was it ever intended to. All it was was proof that says, "We can use a machine to hold aether! Give me gils to research this so I can make it better!" They just felt that they had more time. My memory might be fuzzy but I think that at that time no one knew the Midgardsomr had sealed away this "Blessing". Just a thought.
