Well...my "knee-jerk reaction" is that people need to stop waxing nostalgic over a broken system that led to homogenized Classes and boring Party-Based play.
Ye Olde Armoury System may have had it's benefits to Solo-Play but it absolutely destroyed Partying with it's lack of unique class abilities and everyone either just spam-killing in a group or just not bothering to group up in the first place.

My less knee-jerk (yet still a jerk) reaction is why are some of you now implying that Cross-Class Abilities should be All-or-Nothing? Get rid of Armoury completely? Are you nuts? Is this a secret plot to kill off Solo once and for all? The Conspiracy Theorist in me says that some of you just want 1-50 in 1 day and have nothing but "EndGame" Raids, Dungeons, Primals, etc. which I have no problem with if that's how you choose to play but stop trying to take away from peeps (like me) who enjoy the "Adventure" of leveling, exploring, questing, story missions, etc. (Someone call Brad Meltzer and get the Decoded team to investigate this.)

Ok now my more serious response has been stated by others in a better fashion but is basically this: They are trying to create a system that is open to different playstyles ie., Large Party, Small Party and Solo. This game is not catering to any 1 style (except with specific content designed for each style) so there are going to be restrictions on Open World Cross-Class Abilities.

Restrictions does not = Broken though. Rather restrictions allows them to design Content for all 3 playstyles. I am in favor of all the changes so far (with balancing adjustments of course) but we will see soon enough how it all works out. I think it will be for the better overall to attract a wider audience and create a successful game that will last years.

It's quite easy to solo without the aid of cross class skills, you just have to fight within your means.

Every other mmo class manages to solo without the aid of cross class skills. (it all comes down to balance) Granted thats not SE's strong suit.

For me it's more that a class will effectively be able to adapt to whatever situation is needed in a small party if they have enough options. Obviously for solo play you wouldn't need too much more than whatever would help you outlast the target, either through damage mitigation or healing.

In a small or light party you only need 1 tank (PLD) 1 healer (WHM) and 2 DPS (take your pick) you could even have the 4th spot as BRD to give party duffs and DPS as well.

Yes you are right that classes could have more overlap of skills but I don't think its actually needed if you have a good set up.

Having jobs only could mean that the content in this game could be tuned and balanced much more effectively also, it would probably lessen situations of 7 lnc and 1 con showing up for an Ifrit party.
