I always watch the video first. Always.

I know some people say "well, i want it to be a surprise".....well, if you truly want it to be a surprise you wouldn't be asking how the dungeon goes down

    My personal opinion is this:

Invest four minutes out of your life to at least get a hint at what the dungeon is all about. It doesn't take that much time out of your busy gaming schedule.

With that said if someone really needs to know the fight, I will never put them down and I will be more than happy to explain it all to them. I would rather someone asking for help rather than running in.

Asking questions should never, ever, be met with resistance. I do want to put that out there.

I am merely stating that I personally always watch the videos first. But I'll be more than happy if someone asks for assistance in game

I know that's the right way to do it, but that's not how any party in Raid Finder ever does it and most people on my server farm the fight through Raid Finder PUGs. My top goal with teaching the fight is helping new people to understand what's expected from Raid Finder PUGs, like how if there's 3 or more ranged Black Mages should get priority with being paired with healers. I never watched his guide myself just asked people where they got the info from ^ ^U

Personally I learn better through text guides than videos. I have a auditory processing disorder that makes it hard for me to understand verbal explanations. But some fights don't get proper text guides.

And personally I learn better by doing. I can watch a video fifty times but I may not understand exactly what the video narrator is trying to explain. Sure, I'll look up a video before a fight but I'm still gonna ask you how the fight works. :/

Barring any handicaps, there are seven styles of learning; not everyone in the game is gonna learn the same way people want them to.

In my case, I learn far better if someone gives me a summary of what's going down. This isn't even necessary for most fights anyway, just some have tricky mechanics for a first timer, even if they read a guide. But I do agree that it's nice to go into at least raids with a notion of what's going to happen. I made that effort for my first run of LotA and although I did make some mistakes, no one had to stop and lecture me on how to proceed. Just that the little hints are necessary for some people, cuz not all of us can understand what's going on by just reading a guide.

There's "First time here, and I'd like to go in blind; is there anything here shockingly different from normal no one would normally be able to guess, in ~40 words or less?" and there's asking for a full guide. The second inconveniences the group in order to get a information nonetheless inferior to almost any online guide. In the case of Sophia Ex — "stack for gnosis as usual, but avoid the head lazers from when it appears around the room; tethered adds will later cast (on "Execute") the spell that was cast while they were tethered; for scales, run from blue, to far edge if an even total of lines, closer if odd." If you can't do the fight off those brief tips, it's mostly going to come down to practice and/or imperfect acquisition, the combination of the two making it impossible to really spoil a fight for yourself by skimming a guide or video for the same effect.

I can't learn from videos at all. Most of the time, they seem to make little sense to me. "Watch out for [mechanic]" not matching the video for said mechanic. I need to see something to know what it is. And the best way is by just doing it. I don't want to go in blind, I have to go in blind.

And people like the OP are the reason why I hesitate doing new dungeons when they come out, and refuse to attempt Extreme/Savage modes on my own. Even normal mode optional primals like Sophia, I'm too nervous to do it unless I'm with people who are understanding.

I don't expect new people to know the fight inside and out, I only ask they have a rough understanding before going in (and for most content, that is all you really need).

I only tend to go into big details with rookies on mechanics I see are commonly messed up. Otherwise, they are capable of learning. Yes this is a game, but like many things in life it isn't unreasonable to expect people to go in even somewhat prepared. Ask friends, FC or whatever before going in. The less time we need to waste typing the happier we are and more willing to go "oh, here do X" instead of "why didn't you watch a video and why are you wasting our time?"

Even after a video I'm usually nervous, but I'll at least have the courtesy to let the others relying on me know "hey, I'm new but watched the video so I have a basic idea. I may be shakey on things so point out where I goof please". And you know what? More often than not, they're cool with it and will go "Rai, you needed to do this. Otherwise, you did fine" or "At this mechanic, go here and do this". People tend to be more forgiving if you're upfront AND showed effort beforehand.

You should not expect everyone to do things exactly like you do. If they don't look up a guide, ok. It won't kill you to give a little run down of the fight. But that is just my personal opinion. It appears spending a minute or two explaining something is way too much for some people that unfortunately play this game.

It's turned me off completely from dungeoning with strangers and I feel like I've been forced to have a healer friend at my side every time I do something new. At least that way I'm guaranteed to be able to take 15-50 seconds to have a mechanic explained to me while the DPS cries/dies in a corner. I refuse to listen to some nasally, try hard, for some reason often British guy go on about an entire instance while my ears bleed because I'm not paying to watch someone else play the game.

"B-but you're playing with other people!" Someone will cry.

Yeah- and you're playing with other people too. Not your tight knit circle of friends who've been practicing since launch.

Now if the guides where 100% like this then I'd gladly spoil myself.

Again, difference between elaborating on certain things and needing to explain every detail (the latter is what I see when someone needs to be told what's up). The former is fine as some things just need to be seen, the latter is not. That person's time isn't more valuable than the rest of the party's so all we ask is to consult even a very rough guide.

To Clethoria, tanking is maybe the exception as most fights are easy for a DPS. Tanks usually have more to worry about.
