I use a 3rd party program to work arround this problem, Voicemeeter, but i'd really like to not have to use it. So please, SE help us out and add the option in-game.

+1
I also thought that this was also just something on my end. Its truly annoying, especially if you logged in only to see that you forgot to change your setting..back to the screen again..
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

It is kind of irritating for sure. If I no longer need my headset, for example people leave discord and I want to use speakers instead. I just end up logging out of the game and play something else.
I sometimes forget it happens because no other game I have does this.

I recently started using this as well; there are times where wearing any kind of headset for too long ends up giving me a headache/earache, so I usually just use speakers. But since there are times where I need team speak, that usually meant having to log out and back in.
Seems a little silly that something as basic as the game's audio is causing people to resort to 3rd party programs.
"Ul'dah can keep their dusty markets, and their streets paved in silver and gold.
Limsa Lominsa keep your pirates, and your ships covered in musty mold.
My loyalty lies with Gridania, with the Moogles and the tree spirits of old." -The Forky Conjurer
I use this as well. Though personally I would use it even if it weren't an issue with the game, because windows doesn't let you output audio on more than one device at a time. I have a set of speakers and a headset that I switch between frequently so the most convenient setup for me is to just have the audio play through both. If I want to listen to my speakers I turn the volume up on them, otherwise I put on my headset. No needing to swap primary devices.
All that said, I agree that the game should do a better job of detecting if the default device has changed, or even just provide a drop-down.
I had Voicemeter some time. But even with the smallest buffer there is a huge latency you will get.
Better is the Elgato Sound Capture, which they added not long ago to their Capture Software. I think it could also work without having hardware of them.
