Another earthquake: 6.9 off the coast of Fukushima - 3m tsunami warning in effect

About 5:55am Tokyo time, 10 miles off the coast and 6 miles down, originally 7.3 but now downgraded to 6.9.

Live stream tsunami warning: the estimated height of 1-3m is thankfully not at all 3/11 scale, but it's only ~7am in Japan now and those in the area do need to seek higher ground, so they're getting a rude awakening with sirens:

Not sure how many Japanese players read the English forums, but stay safe everybody, best of luck to you and yours.

My thoughts are with people in the affected areas. I pray it's not a repeat of the terrible tragedy of 2011.

Well, I doubt the Fukushima reactor can mess up the area again, so there's that at least...
But in all seriousness, I do hope people are safe.

It isn't/won't/shouldn't be anywhere near that bad, thankfully. That earthquake was a huge 9.0 with a correspondingly huge tsunami.

However, there is one worrisome variable and that is the state of the now infamous nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Early reports are that the cooling pumps for the fuel have indeed been affected, but that's not much of a surprise given the strong earthquake. Hopefully it won't be too much trouble to keep things under control this time, and from what I've read so far, it shouldn't be, but then again, people will no doubt be a bit on edge about it all until the maybes and probablies are more definite.

Tepco was well prepared for this...

But this time, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or Tepco, the utility that operates three nuclear plants, restored the cooling pump at the Fukushima Daini plant in about an hour and a half. The Daini plant is about seven miles south of Fukushima Daiichi, the ruined plant where three reactors melted down five years ago after tsunami waves inundated the power station and knocked out backup generators.

Tepco reported that it never lost power at either the Daini plant or its neighbor to the north after the Tuesday quake, which had a magnitude of 7.4, according to the Japanese weather service. “We took the regular actions that we should take when handling troubles,” Yuichi Okamura, acting general manager of the nuclear power division at Tepco, said at a news conference on Tuesday.

The company was prepared for big tsunamis, having built sea walls rising to about 46 feet at the Fukushima plants and enclosing backup generators in waterproof facilities, Mr. Okamura said.
Neither plant lost power, cooling pumps were restored quickly, and the sea defenses are clearly quite thorough - even more so than before.
