Suggestion: Incapable New Players Should Be Required to Complete Hall of Novice

I just completed a Tam-Tara Deepcroft run with a tank who was completely unwilling to learn to tank properly. This player basically acted like a angry toddler and said "you're just criticizing me" in response to "You need to use flash 2 or 3 times to establish a base aggro then use your main combo to keep aggro"

Players like this should not be allowed to continue accessing DF to be a burden on other players. When reported, GMs should have a policy to flag this person so they have to complete all Hall of Novice duties before being allowed to return to DF play.

A GM basically told me that if a player wants to play terribly in a DF then they are allowed to do so and other players aren't allowed to tell them how to play properly.

This sort of policy writing is just irrational and detrimental to all players. It basically say someone can harass other players in the DF by playing poorly. SE really needs to revise their policies.

Tan Tara is one of the lowest levelled dungeons so new players are expected, It sounds like you're being the angry toddler now, there is an in game vote kick option, and whilst I agree it is frustrating to deal with players like this, I also realise this is the internet and you'll always come across these people when playing online games, move on.

No amount of Hall of Novice will ever fix the attitudes of those not willing to learn. People will just do what's necessary and return to doing what they want as they always do.

You did what what you could, gave advice. That's all anyone could ask really, and they decided not to take it, so the vote kick was a option. Besides, lower level isn't the only place you'll see this kind of attitude.

Yes, vote kick them and move on. Tam can be done without a tank anyhow xD

Levelling content is meant to be accessible, even to someone who has never played an mmo before. The early levelling dungeons aren't at all difficult; you could probably have completed it without a tank.
These constant calls for tests and gates while probably well-intentioned, make the community look elitist and unfriendly. Would new players be encouraged to sign up and pay a sub for a game that gates the most basic levelling content? I doubt it.
FFXIV is a business first and foremost, and it needs new players. Putting barriers in place that mean everyone has to successfully complete a tutorial before they can even enter a training-instance, would give the impression that the game is for hardcore players only, and would probably put a lot of people off even trying it. I'm sure experienced players, returning players and people making alts would find it a real pain, too.

You offered advice but for whatever reason, the person chose not to take it. You can vote-kick in a case like that or just finish the instance and move on.
What you can't do is make people care. Even if your suggestion was implemented and everyone was forced to jump hoops to access the levelling content, it wouldn't help in a case like this. If someone doesn't care, won't take advice and doesn't want to play well, forcing them to complete a tutorial won't change that.

While you may not be allowed to berate someone on poor play, you are absolutely within your rights to vote kick them on differences in playstyle.

The Hall of Novice actually hands out really nice gear for when you get it (level 15 gear that's better than stuff you can find until level 25). So you'd probably have better luck letting them know about the "great gear they can get for *FREE*" if they do the Hall of Novice, than you will nagging at them in the dungeon (or vote kicking them). And even then, you sometimes just have to go "whatever, getting this upset about a dungeon just isn't worth it".

The OP doesn't consider calling someone an "angry toddler" criticism? What is it then? Motivational speech?

Reread OP. Didn't say they called them that. They just described them as that here. Could've been absolutely polite in dungeons...not that that should be a requirement. Showing frustration at players who won't listen is one possible way to get them to realise how badly they're doing (if not from you alone, the 10th person that says the same thing to them might have a better chance of sticking).
