Friendly Sad Advice needed-The Sunken Temple of Qarn

    First post bear with me..

I've tanked for awhile now and haven't had any issues but when it comes to The Sunken Temple of Qarn I am clearly sucking.. are there any specific training or something I've missed to help prepare for this? I've gotten yelled at for lack of buff and that I need a specific training before I try and tank this. I've look elsewhere for an answer and haven't actually found any instruction.

Qarn has head statues which need to be defeated on top of big buttons on the floor in order to open the way ahead.
Also from Lv30 and up, you can upgrade from a class to a job if you haven't done so yet. Paladin requires lv30 gladiator and lv15 conjurer. Warrior requires lv30 marauder and lv15 gladiator.

It looks like you have yet to unlock your tanking job, and you're still using Marauder. This is why people are upset with you, and why you feel like you're having a rough time.

Not having Warrior unlocked means you're missing out on a lot of free stats, as well as losing out on what eventually will be many key skills. For example, the buff your group was referring to is a tanking stance that increases your max hp and healing recieved, and your emnity generation, at a cost of lowered damage. Needless to say this is important to have - and you earn this at level 30 when unlocking Warrior.

I strongly suggest going back and levelling Gladiator to at least level 15 so you can then unlock Warrior (revisit the Marauder guild to get the quest). You'll also pick up Flash and Convalescence, which are useful cross-class skills. Eventually you'll need to go back and level Gladiator further to 22, at least, to get Provoke (and ideally lvl 34 for Awareness), but it's not critical while levelling.

No, get it now. Awareness can wait, Provoke really can't. It really is a critical tanking tool and not having it isn't really acceptable.

Debateable, I'd say. I didn't find much use for provoke on my PLD until I started doing raids. Then again, getting to 22 isn't exactly a time consuming ordeal.

Right now it's infinitely more vital he actually get his job crystal unlocked, at any rate. He should *probably* get provoke now, but he *definately* needs WAR.

I agree. I went for an extremely long time before even bothering with Provoke and the only time I really felt it's absence was after dying to a boss. It's far from being required in casual content but, as Cenerae said, likely worth collecting right away anyways for a variety of reasons.

On that note, the tool tip for Provoke leaves a lot to be desired, so just to briefly explain what it does.... it gives you a tiny threat/aggro gain over the person currently holding the most enmity on your target. So it's effectiveness scales from miniscule amounts to colossal depending on the situation, but it on it's own does not award you extra enmity; that is to say for example, if you are currently holding the most enmity then using Provoke will have no effect. To that end, you want to follow it up immediately with a skill that does boost your enmity, such as Tomahawk for enemies at a distance or Overpower for those within melee range.

I use it all the time in dungeons. Especially when the dps just can't quite keep it in their pants until I've gathered things up.

Like others said: Become a Warrior. It will grants you Defiance which can only be used as Warrior. It will lowers your output damage but will increase your enmity generation. Basically, you'll need it for the rest of your journey. Your Pulgurist is high enough so you should just go unlock it. I think that's the main issue here and should do the trick.

Get provoke, now. Anyone saying it isn't necessary is missing the point (and if they are tanks themselves are bad tanks to suggest that it is not necessary) of a tank which is to have command of threat at all times. A snap taunt is instrumental in this as there will be times that an aoe'ing blm or smn or brd or w/e is going to have WAY more threat than you on a mob in the pack and waiting 3+ GCDs for you to get your threat combo out and then still be behind in threat because the dps is still going balls to the wall is not good tanking.

In addition to what the others have stated, even with your soulstone and a good set of cross skills, Qarn is still hated by a lot of tanks. The first boss has multiple KO mechanics that can't be ignored, and you have rely on your DPS to make sure you don't get blasted by final sting throughout the dungeon, so there is quite a bit that is not in your power to control, making it all the more important to go into that dungeon properly geared and with the increased stats from your soulstone.

Also note that most players will attack the targets your prioritize, so be sure to mark those damn bees.
