What do you mean hiding weapons? Like the graphics option? I kinda assume the graphics options for hiding certain gear for appearances sake would by definition be a case of personal aesthetics overriding reality. Your character isn't really hiding their weapon or helmet, it just looks better that way.

They store them in Hammerspace, of course! It's the same place we keep all those items that we end up receiving and/or handing over in cutscenes all the other times you don't see them.
Think of it in Tales of the Abyss Logic. But instead of Fonons you have crystal magic. Short explanation is that a character stores fonons in his arm. So in times of close combat, instead of casting magic he can take the fonons stored and whip out a spear. So just entertain the thought of storing all that magic inside yourself and in times of need, schwoop! Axe!
