Concept was interesting at first, but poorly executed.
Controls are clunky and an outright nightmare on gamepad.
Pvp system was bound to give rise to win trading, same as Triple Triad. Subsequently the leader board is constantly rigged, no point in aiming for that.
Challenges are kinda funny, but too time consuming for a mini game and considering the reward.
Tutorial is poorly explained, putting people off right from the start. It took me almost 20 mins to figure out controls when I first played.
Overall it's a tad too complicated for a mini game.
Another botched chance, all in all.
It should have been simple and fast turn-based battles, not an RTS-type thing.
Verminion was dead on arrival for me. Mostly because I'm terrible at anything RTS/MOBA related so I don't even bother.
Another thing that probably puts off a lot of people is the tutorial. Not only is it lengthy and has a lot of text, the timers won't stop on certain steps while you're reading the instructions. You can lose by time out on certain messages if you're a slow reader.

Naoki Yoshida:
Source: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/113554 at 1:14:22...Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
My biggest gripes with it would have to be the 4 of each minion to use the skills and the arena scenery never changing. I'm not much of a pvp person either so the only time I play anymore is just doing Little Big Beast three times for the weekly mgp boost.
The tutorials over-explain an already convoluted control and gameplay scheme. We presumed it was going to be basic gameplay, but unfortunately it ended up asking us to invest far more effort than it ultimately was worth. Especially when it competes with all the other systems already in place inside and outside the Gold Saucer.
i still think they should remove verminion from the game or maybe replace it with something more pokemon-like. turn based rpg pet battles... then it's easy to use the controls, we can see something from your cute pets (something i really dislike at the current verminion, you have to zoom out to control the game, but then you can't really see your cute pets. why even bother then with pet battles???), and turn based means it is more accessible to everyone... there is a reason so many people like pokemon... and maybe put NPCs all over the world to fight, just like triple triad? let us fight everywhere against other players and use the verminon sqaure in the gold saucer as a public viewing area. so the people around can see the pets fighting in the arena...
but one of the problems i have with verminion is: it's dead. it is super dead, it was dead on arrival and will be dead forever. but they have to constantly updating it with every new minion they add to the game. and they add lots of minions with every patch... why wasting dev time on this?

I dont like RTS so main reason I never bothered with it, maybe they shoulda gone more MOBA with it instead. Still idk if it being pokemon lite like wows pet battles woulda made much difference for me lol I don't like wow-kemon either ^^; Think the biggest flaw as soem have pointed out is that its way too involved for a mini game, I could see them maybe rearranging it some though maybe make it like a mix of rts and moba lanes and just overall faster. As for flat out removing it though, just no. Ive seen WoW remove actual pre existing content and it just pisses me the Fluck off. I mean really really irks me lol. I don't mind losers but quitters can go suck a chocobo >.>
