    Bahamuts Eyes?

    So I know Bahamut and the Primal Bahamut are a huge lore talking point, and a lot over the course of 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x has been revealed to us about the two, but recently I have been wondering, do we know what (if anything) happened to his eyes?

    Because there are really only 3 options;
    1. They were completely destroyed
    2. They were consumed
    3. They are still out there somewhere (possibly powering some Allagan device)

    So has there been any hint to any of those 3 options, or is it still very much speculation at this stage?

    One thing that makes me question if they may or may not be still around is that Tiamat lements what happened to Bahamut, but stays alive, where if she were to pass on into the lifestream she could be with him again... if he in fact himself has passed on and is not "still around".

    Your thoughts?

    I've thought about this a bit in the past, but didn't get beyond the theoretical. After all, even what we've seen contains mixed messages, as far as I can tell. Take Nidhogg, for example. We "kill" him in the Aery, and then his eyes fashion a new form that is consistently referred to as a "shade", and when when that shade finally does die, we see Nidhogg's actual spirit rise from the eyes and finally disperse. And yet his eyes still contain aetherial power. When you put all of that together, I don't think we can be sure about anything.

    However, I suspect that if Bahamut was in the Lifestream to be summoned in the first place, he's "deader than dead" regardless of the status of his eyes, unless we someday find out that Nidhogg still has some connection to his own. I can see good reasons to assume that they were completely destroyed (Allag would have known the source of a dragon's power, he never came back, they're never mentioned) and good reasons to keep in mind that we can't be sure (it's Square Enix, they're never mentioned).

    Though when you mention "consumed", I'm reminded of an old nitpick of mine: where the hell did the diresaur in the Burning Heart come from...?

    I still wonder why we don't take Cid's airship out to the Keeper of the Lake to retrieve Midgardsormr's eyes.

    We don't know a WHOLE lot about the interactions between humans and dragons in ancient Meracydia, but it's possible that a human ate the eyes of some lesser dragon, and her descendants were capable of the same transformations as Ishgardians. Or, perhaps, the diresaur transformation is one that can be induced through other means than those familiar to the Ishgardians. It's also possible that the Pain of Meracydia is not a Diresaur at all, but just a dragon that happened to evolve into a similar shape. Or, possibly, since this is a sort of quasi-real battle arena created within Bahamut's Aether, the monsters we fight there were constructed from Bahamut's whims, and he somehow became aware of the existence of Diresaurs in the brief time he was freed from Dalamud before he was put down again (some kind of whale-like long-distance communication with his fellow dragons? Or maybe he subverted the systems of Dalamud enough to allow him to observe the world below?).

    That last, though, I particularly doubt, given that the mob's name specifically states that it is a Meracydian dragon. Still, it's a possibility.

    <grabs own checklist of potential excuses> Secondary means of transformation... not actually happening due to being with the Crystal Heart... the same transformations can be achieved from the eyes of a not-a-celestial dragon... 3 for 3!

    I actually hadn't considered the "It just looks like a diresaur, but it's not." approach, lol. <Arnold Voice> It's not a tulpa.

    So, I'm not disputing that Bahamut is almost certainly dead, but wanted to point out that his being dead is not necessarily a pre-requisite to summoning. If all the Meracydian dragons thought he was dead, and offered enough prayer/faith, that would be sufficient.
