The barrel always reminded me of Jak 2's weapon mods. Just looks extra bulky but gives you the feel of power.....and sometimes just look stupid lol, especially on revolver looking models.

What about ALL weapons getting Emporer's versions, including the shield? So Emporer's new Sword, Emporer's New Claymore, Emporer's New Shotgun, etc.

The Community Team have stated already in the past that they do not want to do this (most recently here), especially in regards to shields, as they consider a shield necessary to be shown to deflecting attacks and because it is literally used as a weapon (Shield Bash, Shield Lob, Shield Swipe etc). They did consider the possibility of adding smaller 'bracer' type shields that could be used for glamour though as a compromise. But we definitely will not be seeing invisible shield glamour in the game at all.

Technically by extension, all other weapons could be considered in the same way - they're needed to be shown on screen during battle for abilities and attacks to make sense (I mean, how would a sword attack work without a sword being visible?). It's just not possible. PGL/MNK is the exception due to them already using their fists anyway. This is the official response on the subject (from just before the one for MNK weapons was added):

We don't have any plans to make all weapon types transparent; however, for monks, we are planning to release something once we look more into the concept of fighting with their own fists.

From a World setting and story perspective, not having a visible shield would mean that you couldn't use shield bash or shield lob, and as such we have no plans to introduce an "Emperor's New Shield." However, we may be able to make a small shield so that it doesn't stand out too much, so we will look into that.

So that is pretty much conclusive this idea will never happen I'm afraid.

I''m gonna have to throw the book at Square Enix on this one... We have glamour, we have tanks tanking in bikinis... realism already went out the window lol.

EDIT: Just had another idea. SE have already made glamour work in one cutscene, whereby your gear is automatically glamoured into something else (no matter what you have on at the time). Perhaps they could implement an anti-glamour system into all cutscenes, probably without too much extra work. That way we can keep our realism on the story perspective, but also be able to wear what we want.
