Off Topic - IMPORTANT For Every Player.

First off let me say for the guy who'll be thinking it in a minute:
this thread is intended to go off topic of anything pertaining to FFXIV or Square Enix in general.

Many of you may have not heard, there is a real threat to the internet today. A US bill, "SOPA" H.R.3261, that could affect countries outside of America, effect sites like this one.

This is VERY important and I encourage everyone living in America anywhere WORLDWIDE to act to stop this bill from passing.

NOTE: I am a avid player of FFXIV like many of you, this is not a BOT or Spam, I simply hope to pass this extremely vital news to everyone using the internet.

EDIT: Made a small edit, I found out people outside of America can in fact use the above site to stop this bill.

I live in america, not in the US though, and I find this to be highly unimportant to me.

I was gonna post this too, but I wasn't sure how much people would approve of something off topic. but yes this is a very real and important issue, and if you aren't concerned than maybe your a little to wrapped up in some unimportant things like which class is going to have water, or the correction of an elemental wheel.

Guys if America passes something like this, especially on a conservative basis then we're going to see some serious GLOBAL consequences.

Bet the movie and music industry has something to do with this.

Watch the video I posted it explains that.

But really, I hope people take this serious whether they think it concerns them or not. This thread doesn't really need replies, it needs support.

Explain how it would effect sites like this ?

SE own their own IP's and this site isn't even based in America.

US senate is s-t-u-p-i-d if they think they can sensor the internetz

If the bill passes here who's to say that it won't influence other countries? However, I do not come here to discuss anything other than FFXIV, but good luck with this.

The bit in the video about being able to get to the sites just by entering the IP address is iffy. I don't see how it would be out of the bounds of what this bill is trying to do for them to block foreign IPs based on WHOIS/nslookup/grep etc.

Of course it wouldn't affect this site.
It could become relevant to this game specifically if the promised user created addon support become a reality.

I wasn't even aware of this bill they are trying to pass but it scares the living shit out of me none-the-less. Of course, it will 'probably' end up as one of those bills with a bark much stronger than its bite but I'd rather not take that chance. If it got out of hand, every country could have a different internet which completely defeats the purpose of the internet.

I'm only speculating here but if there becomes a tangle between foreign/domestic servers and the transmit of data then yes FFXIV very well could be affected because it would hamper the game's ability to send data across country borders.

All kinds of censorship bother me on a moral level and this one is just completely out of control. Even if this bill doesn't completely destroy everything, it sets a prescedence that opens the door for new bills that give governments (Even the US government!) even more power to censor the world to death to fit their ideals.

Countries have tried to claim ownership of the internet for years and it never works, all this will do, rather than affect the world is pull companies out of america, sending the economy into ruins and the US government being forced out, and possible riots when the $ is almost worthless.

All companies will have to do is move out of america if thier sites are blocked for whatever reason because American law has no power outside the US and that applies to the internet, the US cannot block websites in UK for example unless they are US websites which as I said will cause companies to leave US for other countries and just loose customers in america, if it passes it may open the flood gates but I really dont believe any other country would try it because it has the possibility to completly ruin a countries economy when so much is online.
