OP pretty much captured my own FFXI experiences...

I loved the gradual growth, exploration, and danger in the game.

Yeah, the grind was tough and miserable, but it also served to bring the player community together.

Until around WotG, FFXI had one of the best communities in any MMO.

FFXIV is a different game, and is rapidly changing. I hope that some of the aspects that made FFXI a fun game even at low levels will find their way into 2.0

maybe they should make two worlds casual / Hardcore seeing how many people dislike to grind and many people like myself find it to be the best part of any mmo.

there will be no journey until 2.0 (and that is not guaranteed), it is simply leveling in a forest, coastline area or desert at different levels.

The actual grind in XI wasn't even that difficult, the hardest parts for many were actually finding a group and putting away enough time to stay for the 6+ hours per group.

Some of that stuff was horrible even back then... shouting for a WHM to raise was never fun and neither was wasting hours looking for a group or the trains in Crawler's Nest. There's a difference between "a funny memory" and "a funny memory that I don't want to have to deal with again".

Take it slowly if you want, burn through levels if you want. Not everyone plays for the same thing. When the storyline is better paced and there are things to do (including level-capped content and level sync) on both ends of the spectrum, there would be less of a desire to rush through.

I've already made more than enough memories playing this game so it's up to the player.

An 'a long the way'(journey to the top) would be nice. I am not for a steep leveling curve. I actually think the one they have in place now is quite fine. Even without PL'ing you can still get to max in a reasonable amount of the time. I just don't understand the people who are so against leveling, and choosing to play this kind of mmorpg. It's just beyond me.

    **Spoilers**
to progress in game there will be experience points, and you will still need to attain them. ((incoming grind))

    Seriously, this isn't Modern Warfare.

all the reasons why i loved ffxi and yet to find another mmo that i can play for more then a year at a time. after 8 rank 75's i still always enjoyed grinding my classes to max in that game in between all the endgame. my favorite camp was kazam zone, loved killing them mandies and then moving into the gobs then into the larger jungle. also every time i was running to garleigh citadel with my group i would get a smile and snicker on how bad the mpk'ing at the entrance was going to be.

leveling is probably just as fun for me as the endgame, i'll go as far as saying i would rather grind in a party of 6 then do a 8man dungeon. bring on the large scale pve. i'm really hoping they fix the pl'ing issues soon, or at the least by 2.0 so i can enjoy leveling classes normally. if everyone is pl'ing ..then i'm pl'ing i'm not someone that can just do it for fun. take warhammer, i did my first toon to max i did every quest in the zone, every public quest, took my time, by the time second one it was all pl'ing and hand picked quests that got you to max within 2weeks tops. ffxiv was definetly my hope for a game at least a little like ffxi, dunno why every mmo needs to race us to endgame. just don't add it in at all and call it something else then.

I think a lot of people look back at their levelling experiences in FFXI with huge nostalgia bifocals. FFXI's grind was tedious and obnoxious back in the day. But, I do agree that there is a journey to be made from level 1 to level cap. Yoshida's thought process of bringing friends into the game and zerging them to the cap is disheartening.

    Hi Estellios,

Oh no doubt. Definitely it wasn't all "roses" back then. Some parts of progressing took a bit too long and sometimes you had to suffer overly crowded areas or monster-stealing, etc. I definitely didn't enjoy getting eaten by Bune the first time, but that experience is one that I wouldn't forget (and subsequent trips made me never want to experience that again).

And "Yes" definitely not proposing one method or another. I was just curious if people still enjoy the Journey or if they're more interested in getting to End Game nowadays.

At least 2.0 promises some very distinct areas, and as you say, if we get some low level, mid level content to help us along the way, it should make the Journey worthwhile for those that choose to take their time.
