Your death at the hands .. feet? .. of the turtle must have been because one of you attacked it, albeit inadvertently, those huge creatures are always non-aggressive and are not linked in the way the lowest level mobs can be, as shown above.

This is absolutely incorrect - or, at least, used to be. Some of the level 10 turtles DO line-link with the scrawny level 2 and 3 mobs around them, at times. Was hilarious when I found that out for myself. XD One example is a turtle outside and to the East of the Steps of Nald in Central Thanalan. It has, admittedly, been a long time since I checked, so it's quite possible SE has changed this.
