You will be attacked whenever you are a lower lvl than the MOB (not always but most times). They will not attack you as you get higher (they don't want to die lol) but there has to be some sort of realism in the game you can't go in higher areas as lobbie and expect that you can just wander around smelling the flowers.

This is generally not true. There are two types of mobs: those with a green icon are passive and will only attack when you attack them, and those with a red icon, which are aggressive and will attack you as long as your level is not 10 or more above theirs when they detect you.

Another thing to note is that there are generally two types of detection for a mob: Sight, which is a cone in the direction they are facing (look for the arrow on their circle if you have them targeted,) or Sound, which will detect you within a certain radius if you are running (I've heard that walking will make them not attack, but my experience is mixed at best.)

If you are in a group, then monsters will be linked, which can be seen as a line connecting monsters when you target them. You may be attacked by passive monsters when attacking aggressive monsters because they are linked.

Leads to some funny moments when you're on a crafter/gatherer. Doing an Ixal quest earlier today, marched into the Stronghold with my Lv60 WVR and they ignored me. Then comes this WAR, probably doing plot stuff and they jumped him. When the worst I could do was knit them a very itchy sweater.

Minor correction, that should say "more than 10" instead of "10 or more". With a ten level difference, they'll still attack. With an eleven level difference, they won't.

Mobs can be linked when you're solo, too. (Maybe it occurs more often if you're in a group, though. I'm not sure. I'd always thought it was a static rule that certain mobs would always be linked and others never would. But I haven't really looked into it as there isn't very much content that I'll sometimes do solo and other times in a group, so I may just have not noticed the differences.)
