I hope they add something more furry in general but I'm not getting my hopes up. Who knows with SE, though.

I personally take it as a good sign. The wolves, at least their heads, look close to the concept art. It shows that they took previous ideas they thought up and implemented them into the game in some form. Not relevant to Viera, but semi-relevant to the thread (considering the concept art that keeps being thrown around):

Take it as increased hope for Viera, or killing any hope for it, both are valid considering this revelation.
Concept arts being used. Fantastic news maybe we might see some Viera un future. Thanks for the heads ups.Not relevant to Viera, but semi-relevant to the thread (considering the concept art that keeps being thrown around):

Pretty interesting seen this new "race" in action!
Furry doesn't sell copies and accounts. It's a very niche taste, even more so in Japan. Final Fantasy XIV is a mature MMORPG, so they'll go with what sells. And that's Viera.
I know I have been pretty anti-viera, but if they are going to go down the race route, and we do get the wolf race next, then I would be more happy about Viera after that. My biggest concerns are the number of resources that go into a new race, and how little Viera adds to what we already have. Adding the wolf race first would force me to concede any hope of dropping race additions, and also create a diverse race option that makes the race pool look less bland if Viera were to come along, and that is probably the best way to get me to like Viera.
Considering we have Lalafell (short cute), Miqo'te (cat girl/boy), Hyur (token human race), Elezen (token giraffe race), Au Ra (the short lass and the tall lad with horns 'n' tails) and Roegadyn (the brutes), I doubt adding a furry race will influence copies being sold and accounts being made. There's a flavour for almost everyone who buys this game (unless you want to be a short race that isn't cute).
Now if your argument was about 'why would SE make a race that a small % would play?' then you might have an argument.
I don't think we need another race, per se, but I absolutely adored the old concept art of Viera and would love to see them in game.
This one is going to stay Lala, but you can bet your bottom dollar my main would be a fierce bunny lady.
Listen here you...
And my point is that there's enough flavours for everyone (though some overlap, like the Miqo'te and Au Ra) that a new race (furry or Viera) won't influence anything. Fans of Viera will most likely still purchase FFXIV because there's something almost similar. Miqo'te, Elezen and maybe Au Ra and furries will still purchase the game because Miqo'te are as close as they can get (though if they like birds, the Vanu Vanu armour would probably work for them). Heck, if FFXIV didn't have Roegadyn (which would be a travesty), I'd probably be a Lalafell, or Elezen. I put gameplay over race, especially since races don't really add anything to gameplay.
All a new race will influence is Fantasia sales (and I know some Miqo'te, Roegadyn and maybe Lalafell and Au Ra players would change into a wolfman race if they could).

Yeah. No. Viera is the race of a classic and massively popular Final Fantasy protagonist, from a game that is incidentally gonna get a remake this year, adding further popularity and visibility for the future. And my point is that there's enough flavours for everyone (though some overlap, like the Miqo'te and Au Ra) that a new race (furry or Viera) won't influence anything. Wolf person is just a wolf person.
That Viera would have a much larger marketing effect is the simplest case of Marketing 101.
