    Getting Started in PVP

So I'd like to try for that glorious mount (have wanted one since I first saw them!). I did a little of the Feast so I understand the basic concept of it. I'd like to try as Bard. Is there any linkshell or group on Leviathan I can join for some PVP mentoring?

I have a question. I understand that you get a certain number of points in the feast toward your ranking. So I'm unranked right now but with a few more battles, I will be Bronze I suppose. How many gaps are there between Bronze > Silver > Gold, etc. ? i'm assuming it takes more wins to get from one tier to another but I didn't see it listed anywhere how many?

    It goes:

    Unranked - 0
    Bronze - 250
    Silver - 500
    Gold - 1000
    Platinum - 1500
    Diamond.- 2000

I may be wrong on Silver, it may be 600. The rest are accurate, however.

And it's always 25 points per win, or does that go up with different tiers?

What happens if you lose your "promotion" attempts? Do you just keep going until you win?

For a balanced match (ie 1000 total team rating vs 1000 total team rating), it's always +25. If the ratings are skewed (ie 1 team is 700 rating, the other is 1000), then it changes. In the previous example, if the 700 rated team wins then they'd gain something like +29 (random number), and the loser would lose more than they typically would as well.

Long story short, yes all tiers gain the same amount, they just lose more at higher ranking.

If you fail a promotion you simply re-try on your next win that brings you over the minimum promotion threshold. The cap for each tier is +100 over the minimum threshold for next tier. To be more clear, the most points you can possibly gain as gold is 1100. If you hit 1099 and still are not Platinum, then win your next game, you will gain +1 rating, bringing you to the 1100 cap for Gold.

I see.. I'm playing now between Dark Knight and Monk. I've been told my burst damage isn't that great though. I know the rotation is probably different in PVP than PVE of course, but aside from mashing all my buttons, how can I improve it?

There really is no "rotation" in PvP.
    - As a Monk, don't try to play like you do in PvE, consistent damage is nowhere near as important as raw burst
    - Use your strongest OGCDs together instead of weaving them in one by one, an example for bursting someone who's at full health would be: Snap Punch + Elixir Field & Forbidden Chakra, Bootshine and stun + Tornado Kick and Axe Kick / Somersault - there are many ways to burst as a Monk though, so it really depends on the situation as your burst is way more flexible than say, a Dragoons
    - Don't try to burst someone without GL 3
    - Dots are situational in PvP but you should still use them if you're not trying to burst asap, especially Demolish
    - If you just used your full burst and your team / healer isn't under immense pressure or chasing down the enemy team after a kill, back up and recharge Forbidden Chakra (you can do the same while chasing someone or when you're snared)
    - Try to coordinate burst with your fellow DD; that can be tricky sometimes as it's solo queue but simply watching out for their buffs help a lot
    - Don't use Tornado Kick unless you're 90% sure it guarantees a kill or you can / want to combo it with Axe Kick, Perfect Balance or Somersault
    - Perfect Balance and Somersault (aside from the obvious benefits) can be used in more ways than simply getting your GL stacks back, e.g. for spaming One Ilm Punch or sometimes even Arm of the Destroyer
    - Use One Ilm Punch, seriously, just do it
    - Use FoE 90% of the time, only switch to FoW when you're not being focussed and chasing down a target
    - Make a cancel macro for Blood for Blood and if you want to focus and/or LB chat macros
    - Make a Purify macro for either your Focus target or specifically for your healer
    - Don't simply run away when you're being focussed, you will still get a lot of damage while giving the enemy healer room to CC, HoT everyone or pick their nose
    - Don't spam your stuns like you do in PvE, you don't want a target to be on stun DR when you're trying to land an LB or generally trying to secure a kill; so you even need to think twice about using Shoulder Tacke only as a gap closer
    - Always try to secure the adrenaline box, that is important for everyone but since you will be the one picking it up as a melee and probably dealing most damage to it, that goes double for you
    - Only LB when Fetter Ward is up when there's a good chance that it can be interrupted otherwise
    - Offensive boxes spawn at the 4 minute mark, don't make your healers life any harder by giving both of them to the enemy DDs

I'm sure I forgot something, but this hopefully helps you get started.
