Abilities I haven't learned yet, can I get them on my bar somehow?

Hi! So, I've run into some frustrations recently with learning new abilities. Moving around all my buttons to accomodate them is becoming a bit rough.

I ran some PotD, and got to keep the unlearned abilities on my bar, so I could figure out placement and get used to them being there early. It is a great help. What I'm wondering is, is there a better way to put these on my bar early? I would like to map out my bars so I don't have to keep learning new binds.

You can only do it if your character has access to that ability from within the game.

On a technical side though, all that data is stored in the character data files on your computer. I've previously copied them from one character to another to duplicate my HUD settings, macros, etc. So if you or a friend had a character with everything to 60 and that friend put every skill on a hotbar, you could overwrite your character's with that and adjust, but it's not really worth the hassle. PotD is a much better way to go about it and then you also get exp!

Due to the way the skills are completely hidden until unlocked (because of quest locking them) PotD is currently the only way I know of to "preset" all your skills before unlocking. It's also a good place to test out configurations, as you now have up to 150 extra floors of level 60 to play with.

Also, bare in mind that if you run PotD as a Class, you won't get access to your Job abilities. So if you do plan on running PotD to get everything on your bar, make sure you're on a Job, or that you know what all of your Job abilities are, so you can plan out where to put them.

While leveling to 60 in HW I did it with placeholder macros. The macros did nothing except an /echo that made a sound and called me an idiot for pressing a button with nothing on it.

This is what Ive done with multiple classes, sans the insulting echo q-q.

You'll have to know the name of each skill you'd like to add.

    /macroicon "skill name

That's it. Replace them with the real skill when you obtain them, until then you at least will become visually accustomed to your hotbars.

... these are some really fantastic ideas!
Especially the insulting comment, I should give that a whirl. Nothing says grokking like getting insulted for being wrong!

(You can also use the auto-translate function to get the {skill-name} instead of typing it as "skill-name", which can be easier to type and identify.)

I don't think this is true as I had all my Dragoon and Black Mage skills, including the job rewards.

I do think that Arcanist gives Summoner skills, so this trick doesn't work if you want to play Scholar.

That's exactly right about copying one character's folder files into another character's folder. However I don't see any hassle with it, it's just a quick copy paste and it can include everything you don't have to set up all over again for an alt: skill slots, UI, macros,...

If you have another character that has that job mastered, you can try copy-paste the files in FFXIV folder in My Documents, or just edit the file yourself.
