The final boss of PotD and his story and lore implications (Spoilers)

This will probably contain Spoilers from both Final Fantasy 14 and Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together, just a heads up.

So if you have finished up to floor 100 of the Palace of the Dead, surely you've been thinking about the final boss, Nybeth Obdilord, and his place in Eorzea.

To get ahead of myself a bit since I'm not sure how I can explain my thoughts without putting this out there, but I was really thrown for a loop when they all but said that Nybeth came from a different world/realm (I forgot the exact word they used) and without a doubt he hails from Lodis/Gargastan from the world of Tactics Ogre. If that's not enough of a clue in for that fact, he mentions a certain "loved one" that he has been trying to revive. If this truly is the same Nybeth, then he's most likely talking about his late Wife, Cassandra Obdilord, and perhaps even one of his two daughters Moldova.

So if all of this is the case, and I believe it is, then that opens up an interesting line of discussion, how did he get here? I haven't played too much of the PSP version of TO, but I heard there was a dlc that extended the Palace of the Dead in there a bit (Though I saw a bit of it on Youtube), nor have I plunged to the depths of the PSX version, so if there is something that explains this, I'm sorry.

Some time when you kill Nybeth, he claims that he has become immortal and that he had finally understood the purpose of the Palace of the Dead, though he never really went into detail. What if something down there had helped him cross over to Eorzea somehow? My thoughts are a little scattered right now and I just want to get the talk going so I can't really say too much about it now.

In TO, he had been practicing his Necromancy and had attempted to bring back his wife, though he always had issues with bringing back both body and soul, only ever managing one or the other. He seems to be having a similar problem here, though he seems to be finally getting over that hump with Edda, whose combination of the two lead to her seemingly fighting him for a bit. It begs the question whether he was finally able to fully summon people back from beyond the veil, or was it just a fluke?

And in regards to Nybeth's "friend" he talks to in his little flashback, I can't think of who it is. It seemed like some white haired old man when it showed a picture of who it may be, but it's not much. The only person I can think of at the moment who fits that description is Warren, but the two were hardly friends in TO. Perhaps he mean friend in a kind of way where it's actually an enemy of his. The scene was kinda unclear and I'm already forgetting the details.

Anyway, with that last bit and the rest of the closing quest cut scene, it seems like we're setting up bigger story line with here, with potentially a lot of Lodis representation. Perhaps future Deep Dungeons will feature more of this plot line, and if so, who might we see? We would eventually meet this "friend" of Nybeth's I'm sure, but we can see a lot of interesting characters. We can get Denim/Denam, or maybe even his daughter you can recruit in the PSP version who fights against Nybeth.

Sorry if this is a bit scattered, my organizational skills aren't the best and tbh I'm still kind of fanboying over one of my favorute games getting its day in the sun in 14 lol.

Also, I haven't done floors 101-200, so if there's some more info out there on those floors, feel free to share it in spoiler tags because I seriously want to know.

As for Nybeth's "friend" I think you're looking at it wrong. The white haired man is the back of Nybeth's head, looking up to Denam on the stairs. That's how I interpreted it anyways, with Nybeth's sort of white/red turban. It was a flashback to when Nybeth was more man and less lich-thing, likely in the "original" Palace of the Dead? I only ever played Tactics Ogre through once and I don't think I actually did the Palace there so I could be mistaken.

I need to go and do the new floors, will be doing some runs tomorrow since emergency maint tonight. That said I would like to point out that the "Void" is once again a story-related when usually its in the background. Given that Gilgamesh is generally considered to be traveling to other worlds via the Void, its possible the world of Tactics Ogre is also connected to the Void. Atleast if our Void is the same as the ones mentioned in other FF games.

I don't think it is. We learn the nature of the Void we deal with in FF14 in 3.4 and while its conceivable that its nature might leave it open to act as a 'doorway' I think this particular void is specific to the FF14 universe.

Okay time to clear up stuff. The void in FFXIV is different from the void in FFV, yes. BUT Gilgamesh doesn't travel the void. He travels the Rift, which is a completely different thing. The void of FFV was sealed inside the rift. Furthermore DIssidia Final Fantasy is set entirely in the rift.

slightly unrelated, but clearing floor 100 the other day raised some questions regarding the echo

Shouldn't the echo have allowed us to read that scroll left behind by Nybeth? Or does the power to understand any foreign language only apply to spoken words
Also interesting to see that we apparently are capable to willingly trigger an echo flashback under the right conditions after all

It was said that the echo manifests differently from people to people with it. Some can have mastery over languages like Minfilia(?), Krile claims she con communicate with animals. We also know Echo users can easily dispel barriers such as Unukalhai and Ysale.

In the end, I'd say that yes, it would be possible for echo users to decipher Nybeth's scroll, it's just that the WoL don't have a complete mastery of it. ALthough if anythng, it might be showing that the WoL is starting to show retro-cognitive abilities with just mere items.

Hopefully, the WoL will have someone to train them with their echo use

I feel like pointing out that Nybeth has some post-battle dialogue that seem to have shook the Warrior of Light. Particularly pointing out there might be certain people they want to being back.

(Which might cause problems regarding hypothetical crossovers with World of Final Fantasy)

I can't help but feel like its a case of Occam's Razor and Nybeth is from the 13th Shard. My suspicion is that the lowest floors of the Palace start to get close to the Aetherial Sea and thus Nybeth, clearly an accomplished mage was able to cross over to it. Having said that I suspect that a lot of his background would be largely unchanged from FFTO

Well if this would have been an RPG which gives you choices like Witcher I would have probably chosen his side and tried to get the death back to life but since this isnt...*sigh* At least I was able to tell the others that I found him to be a tragic character.

@myahele: We seems to be one of the echo user that can understand different languages which is shown with the beast tribes and also the followers of Sophia. So theoretically we should be able to read the scroll..Minfilia never understood other languages at least not in 1.0 since there was one cutscene with the slyphes where she could not understand them but we could. Maybe its just a simple oversight, maybe the text was in a way that what we saw in the echo scene.
