The simplest solution to the glamour issue

Revamp the armoire, which everyone has access to after a certain level. Instead of the current tabs of achievement, seasonal, etc., tabs would be by equipment (heads, arms, earrings etc.) and every piece of clothing will be stored there in list form and arranged via ilevel. Ideally it would have been also divided by class/job but that would be pushing it.

This way the current system won't be disrupted too much i would think.

I've thought about this too. Allowing armor and weapons to be stored in the armoire, and when you attempt to cast a glamour on something, it pulls the list from items in your armoire instead of your inventory/armory chest.

It'd solve the problem, but since it would lose them money from extra retainer sales, dont count on it. :3 (Or any real solution to the inventory issue.)

It also would not address the issue of having different glamours for different Jobs that share the same gear, e.g. healers.

There isn't a glamour/inventory issue. Just don't hoard everything you get, I'm a glamour addict and even I don't believe anyone needs 50 different kinds of shoes/gloves...

I'm with Foxy here. There's no issue unless you go out of your way to make one.

The glamour system is pretty poor in this game. Ideally, glamour should actually work similarly to gear set feature. Creating and editing your glamour sets pulls from a catalog of all the items you've ever had bound to you, not your inventory. You could then equip this glamour set just as you do a gear set. That way, your glamour would apply to any armor you have on even when you switch it, because it's actually applying to the slot, not the gear itself. Creating and modifying glamour sets would also not require any kind of consumable nor have level restrictions, only the typical class/job restrictions. You would even have the option of tying a glamour set to a gear set, so they switch together automatically.

If for some reason you did want to include some kind of consumable use, I would make it where you need to use a consumable to add the gear to the glamour catalog, but not for making/editing glamour sets. I think consumables are lame to begin with, but there are strangely those who live and die by them.

This system solves most of the current issues people have, like inventory space, general ease of use, and glamours that force you to apply them to different jobs other than the ones you actually want. It's already there too, in the form of gear sets, so aside from the glamour catalog, SE has all the pieces they need already.

I think it's more a case of plenty of other MMOs on the market now are allowing players to store absolutely every piece of equipment they ever acquire in a wardrobe to be used whenever they like. WoW recently introduced an extensive wardrobe system that retro-actively took the appearances of every item your characters had ever owned in the past since release of the game. FFXIV is far behind the standard for the genre when it comes to cosmetics systems now. People are asking for this sort of thing because it is now a basic expectation. If MMOs want to put so much of an endgame focus on making yourself look good they need to give players the tools to facilitate it. A wardrobe system is essential to that.

As it stands now, if a player wants just a single glamour set for each job that's 5-10 pieces (depending on if they bother with jewellery) x 12 jobs. You can double that if they glamour their crafting/gathering classes as well. The player has to keep hold of these glamour items permanently because every time they upgrade a piece of equipment they have to apply the glamour again. So for just 1 glamour set per class/job that's already a nearly full retainer. Now if a player wants to have alternate glamours for some jobs... well it adds up quickly.

For some players this is a BIG deal and the game doesn't facilitate that playstyle very well where other MMOs do.

WoW is over a decade old, and a dated game at that, FFXIV has only been out for 3 and a half years, Wow has had plenty of time to work out the kinks, and since it isn't nearly as graphically pleasing as FFXIV it might be much easier for them.

You could just as easily say that FFXIV has had that time as well. By releasing after WoW, and having had WoW's example all those years, there's no excuse not to do everything they did but better. A glamour catalog type system was asked for during 1.0. They've had more than enough time to implement something. Maybe they didn't have the resources or money or time, but that shouldn't affect player expectations.

WoW only just added their transmog catalog a few months ago. So arguably if ffxiv was copying stuff WoW did when they relaunched then it makes sense not to have a glamour catalog. There's a lot more to it than just "make the system".

The OP says his idea is the "simplest" solution but it likely isn't. Without knowing exactly how their character and item data storage works and how much memory is needed per character to store it all one cannot comment on how easy or simple it would be.
