    [petition] PS4 framerate

    (First, I'd like to say I don't like this title. I don't like the "petition" part of it, for it sounds offending, while I wish it sounded engaging.)
    I "petition" it for the only purpose that then concerned people might see it and thus might support it.

    Framerate on PS4 is painful. When I go through Idyllshire - and I must, should I want to play - I suffer. I stopped counting the headaches it gave me. Even at Old Gridania, for the current event, it is disturbing.
    I removed visual effects. I removed overhead names. I set transparencies to full or none instead of in between. I even tried to go back to 720p or remove scrolling texts. Won't help.

    Everything you add makes screenshots nicer. And I trully like that. But please, do something about the framerate! I'm even considering buying a PC for that only purpose; and I know I'll can't afford it.

    Is there any chance you offer PS4 players an option for comfortable framerates?

    Please! Look at those topics!

    There's not really much that can be done, Idyllshire isn't more graphically intense than the rest of the game, there's just more people crammed in there than there is everywhere else. Even a high end PC gets bogged down when there's a ton of people in a given area. The PS4's situation is made worse because its processor is an AMD processor, and long story short on those is that they're not optimal in an MMO environment. When there's too many things going on, a bunch of effects or a bunch of people, it starts to chug along.

    My only suggestion for remedy is a lower population server.

    A lot of the things you tried to adjust (barring the effects) were simply UI elements and were not going to do anything other than reducing screen clutter, and the Effects don't really matter in Idyllshire unless you've got a dozen WHMs spamming holy.

    The only thing you could have done, and you did, is reduce the resolution to 720p

    What I do not understand is why the PC version allows you to limit the amount of people you see while the Playstation 3 & 4 version doesn't seem to have the same option. Would help a lot with FPS for the Playstation 4 in crowded areas.

    I don't know why the PS4 don' have that option, but the PS3 is limited to 30 people by default. On PS3 you will see people and enemies vanish and appear again during mass fights.

    Go into your graphics options and drop the resolution from 1080p to 900p. Display settings from maximum to standard.

    As a Console player since PS1, I don't know much about game requirements, so correct me if I'm wrong:

    - FFXIV asks the CPU a lot because of everything and everyone to be inserted and then asks the GPU a lot - to render them.
    - It seems the CPU of the PS4 is bottlenecking, hence the no-effect of setting down to 720p (GPU rendering job).
    - Would an option demand less to the CPU, framerate would increase? Something flattening distant objects (no body shape, just a flat shape to render), for example?

    Nothing possible with a PS4, hence the topic!
    Only [720p vs 1080p] and [original vs new dx11 effects]

    You arent going to get much change here on the standard PS4. The PS4 PRO however will likely handle the crowded areas better due to its slightly higher clocked CPU. The PS4 runs the game really well actually. The only time you do see the frames drop down to what feels like around 15-20fps is in areas like idyllshire. In dungeons, raids, and open world areas the PS4 generally plays the game really well considering its hardware limitations, and majority of places keeps the framerate north of 40FPS. It should be noted that it does this while not sacrificing much with regards to Image Quality either. The game runs incredibly well on ps4, and really is one of the jewels on the ps4 for a online game.

    The reason you see the ps4 frame rate dive in crowded areas is due to a CPU bottleneck. This is why you see little or no change when dropping from 1080p to 720p from the game settings. The reduction in resolution mostly just helps the GPU, and in these crowded areas the GPU isnt maxed out even at 1080p, because its essentially waiting on the CPU. So, while adjusting the resolution takes a load off the GPU, its still waiting on CPU.

    The PS4 base model runs a multi core cpu that is only clocked at 1.6ghz. This is the root cause of the lag you see in idyllshire. The only way to alleviate this would be to scale the crowding down substantially, where you were only seeing maybe 1/4 of the people actually there. This would affect density and draw distance as well though in every area. FFXIV is tuned to the ps4 about as well as they can do it to keep the game playable in crowded areas without butchering its graphics quality in areas it runs just fine. The PS4 PRO will without a doubt handle ffxiv better in these areas. The PS4 Pro has the same CPU architecture as the base PS4 but is clocked at 2.1ghz instead of 1.6ghz. The memory is also sped up a little in the Pro. The biggest horsepower jump in the PS4 Pro comes to its GPU,which will more than double its theoretical performance. What will help ffxiv the most however is the bump in CPU clock. Its hard to say how many frames you will pick up with a 500mhz upclock, but it could put the framerate back to around 30fps in these areas, which would alleviate the noticeable jerky/laggyness you feel when running aorund and turn the camera in these crowded areas.

    tldr; buy a ps4 pro if you want to see improvements without having to leave the ps4 platform.

    I hoped about it, but a few things made me think otherwise:
    - developers will work on a "PS4 Pro Enhanced" version only if they wish to;
    - "PS4 Pro Enhanced" status only requires 1080p and Sony seems to prefer 4k over 60fps;
    - FFXIV "PS4 Pro Enhanced" may offer a few more fps (marginally faster CPU) at first, but it is not an obligation to keep more fps over time. Just more details to render at 4k and a CPU bottlenecking... again.

    Even if SE dont do anything the PS4 Pro should offer better framerates out of the box, simply because of its increased horsepower. The FFXIV Framerate is already unlocked on ps4 up to 60fps, so we dont need a patch to allow it for ps4 pro. SE Could do a patch for ps4 pro that tunes the game better to the increased power, but as is you should see a better framerate in idyllshire on ps4 pro.

    Only PS4 Pro Enhanced versions of games will have access to the PS4 Pro's extra power. If a game doesn't have the PS4 Pro Enhanced certification, the PS4 Pro will lock itself down to being a standard PS4...

    Also, since developers decide what they add to get the PS4 Pro Enhanced certification, they can decide to work only on 4k; not a better framerate at an already available resolution. So FFXIV PS4 Pro Enhanced, if exists, may be only a 4k version of FFXIV. At 720p/1080p resolutions, should the PS4 Pro Enhanced certification not apply, it would still run as on a standard PS4.
