Top 5 things that got you hooked..

Hey all, list the top 5 things about FFXIV that drew you in or got you hooked. Feel free to do what I've done and colour code things that are no longer true as red and things that are true as green. I've listed two items as orange, as they original content is still there, but new content has scrapped it.

maybe there are certain features that FFXIV had over its competitors, or maybe you're just a long time FF Fan
    • The class to job system

Graphics: only thing i knew about ff14 is that it had been running for at least 3-4 years? Anyways, I jumped in blindly and was amazed-and still is- by the gorgeous environments.

Job system: the only mmorpg that I've ever played that had a multiple job system was Eden Eternal and I loved it. So FF14 was a natural fit for me.

Old content replayability: I like that even if I did a dgn once, I can always go back and reap its benefits at a synced lvl.

FATE: Some fates can be pretty epic. The Redbellies, that crab boss and Svara come to mind.

Gold saucer: I don't go into it as much as I did but I still like to chocobo race once in a while

    MSQ duty: Raubhan

    1. Pacing: No I don't mean the story. I mean the actual pace at which the game plays. Coming from FFXI, it was a huge contrast to years of hitting one monster for 5 minutes.
    2. Changing jobs on the fly: Again, compared to FFXI, a vast improvement.
    3. Crafting/gathering: HUGE improvement from FFXI's "cross your fingers and wish upon a star" style.
    4. Story: I liked the way it built up from "nobody to hero."
    5. The last is a tie for Duty Finder, and daily (casual) things: Things I can do on my own, without forming a static, joining a massive LS, or waiting for hours on a shout group.

    1. The Final Fantasy name. In my youth I was a huge FF fan. To this day Final Fantasy Tactics remains one of my favorite games of all time. I played FFXI a teensy bit when it was still on the Xbox 360 but never enough to really call myself a FFXI player, so when I saw that FFXIV was being remade, I knew I had to jump on and give it a more proper go than I gave FFXI.

    2. One character, all Jobs. An intriguing system that I found very satisfying in Tactics, and was happy to see brought to this game. Although they are moving further away from the 2.X system of 30[class]+15[class]=[Job] I still find it satisfying to be able to fill multiple roles for my static or FC groups with the click of a button.

    3. Pacing. Of combat, specifically. I always found WoW far too hectic for my tastes. I like the pacing of combat in FFXIV. Encounters feel far more structured and strategic, as opposed to WoW's "everyone run in and spam the heck out of your rotations" flow. Subjective, of course, that's just how I see it.

    4. Main Story Quests. Though FFXIV's story has had its weak points, I very much enjoy the fact that it has a comprehensive main plot in the first place. Most MMOs provide a bare-bones story, and I find it difficult to become invested in what I'm doing. All of the MMOs I've played at any length in recent memory were story-driven (FFXIV, SWTOR, and GW2). Not everyone likes FFXIV's story and lore, but I certainly do.

    5. Immersive world. As a roleplayer, I appreciate when developers take the time to introduce small quality-of-life improvements to enhance the immersion of their game world. Things like your character actively turning their gaze towards your selected target, multiple surfaces for sitting, different idle poses, and the like help to engage roleplayers like myself in what we do, more so than any other MMO I've played.

Graphics: I had a friend begging me for over a year to play FFXIV with her, but I wasn't really interested in playing a subscription based game while only working part-time and not having enough money left over after paying bills. Until she showed me pictures from her character's wedding. They just looked so amazing and beautiful (it was the dress, I'm certain of it now lol) that I couldn't resist anymore and began playing. Even now, when I'm redoing the story on my alt, I just sit and look at the scenery around me sometimes. And while the graphics could always be better, to say they aren't already amazing would be a lie, I think.

Character creation: While limited, I was able to create a pretty accurate depiction of an OC I've had for about 5+ years now (my current main you see me posting as here). That was just so amazing to me, because I am super attached to this character, and I was excited to experience a game/story through her.

One character, 13 jobs: I really liked that I could have all jobs unlocked on a singular character. I had played a free MMO a while back that didn't allow that, so I had like 500 alts so I could be different things. I like how in FFXIV you can change with a click of your mouse (or controller).

Now things that keep me in love with this game:

Playing with my FC: While my FC is small and is essentially 5 active players and their alts (seriously, that's the composition XD), these people have become friends to me IRL, and I enjoy being able to derp around in game with them, and test out new content.

Lore/Story: Some people find the lore/story underwhelming, but I love it. I loved the lore enough to spend $50 USD on the Lorebook, and it was worth every cent (no I didn't buy it for the minion). It is truly a fascinating read, and makes me want to re-experience the MSQ and the world of FFXIV even more, the more I read the book.

I seriously fall in love with this game more and more each day. Whether I'm playing on my main or an alt.

    I would say:

The community: FFXIV has a really nice community where everyone is really helpful and generally nice. In dungeons if you need to afk for a second then people willing wait unlike in WoW where you mostly will get kicked. I am someone who believes in doing your best in all content but I'm glad players cannot harrass each other in regards to dps in this game and kick for it.

Lack of Specs: Specs can be really fun but are a pain to balance. In WoW, specs add tons of customization options but often times one is expected from a player because it is OP. I'm glad FFXIV does a good job balancing all the jobs and that there is a lack of specs.

Gearing: Tomes are meh but I'm glad we do not have Rng stats on gear. It makes it a lot less frustrating gearing up jobs and keeping up with everyone. I can't say how much bad RNG I have had in games where certain gear stats are expected but I never see the gear with the correct stats drop.

    • Friends (Take orange as a time between old friends leaving and new friends made)
    • Final Fantasy
    • Arcanist/SMN - I know a lot of people hate that SMN is a DoT job and not a "true summoner", but I'm happy with it either way. Even more so with the 4.0 skills.
    • Sub MMO that isn't WoW
    • Crafting - Even specs haven't changed my opinion. I'm a nut for crafting in any game.

A mentor stole my house, slapped me across the face, and raised my ping from 15 to 30. Literally unplayable.

    - Multiple classes per character: Really can't be overstated how great it is to switch between classes, do multiple combat/crafting/gathering roles, and not have to log out to another character for any of it.
    - No class-race locks: It kinda killed my interest in some of the other games like Tera and Guild Wars 2, since on top of the "log out to switch" issues, you couldn't even play some classes without being stuck on a race you might not like.
    - Story/Lore/References to other FF games: It may get derided as "theme park", but it's pretty great seeing all the references and consistencies between monsters, bosses and plotlines from earlier FF games.
    - Music: Most FF music is catchy and memorable, and it really adds to the feel of the game.
    - Roegadyn: I like me some beefy mages
