When it comes to the language barrier...

Is it acceptable to use an online translator to try and communicate? I use the auto-translator as best I can, but sometimes there are things you can't communicate with it, and I was curious if an online translator is socially acceptable?

I understand grammar and such are usually off when using them, but I'm wondering if it would still be useful at all.

Anyone try doing this with results?

I don't know about other languages, but Japanese > English and English > Japanese as well as English > Tagalog > Tagalog > English with machine translators is pretty bad grammatically -- Most Japanese players will get the gist of what you're trying to say if it's not too butchered lol, so it can still be useful, but you're a lot better off properly learning at least basic conversation in the appropriate language.

Google Translate uses very formal/wordy variations of sentences and from what I'm aware of, adds all sorts of unnecessary words and particles that are generally not used in informal online chat. Stuff like, if you mean to say "Kill this monster!", the translated version of the sentence in Japanese would sound like something awkward such as "This monster is to be killed!"

I'm giving a very lame example, I know - JP speakers please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah your pretty much right. Sometimes reading some translated shouts in uldah are funny (the ones google translate), you get the meaning but its said in such a way it makes you laugh.

What i want google translate to say:
"Looking for party members! One more and we will head out, PM me your class and job!"

what it translates to the JP from google translate:
"Find my party member! One more, we will go forth, I am PM, the class and work!"
