Bettas would be odd because they'd probably fight everything smaller than a shark in the tank, if you go by what they mooch off of.
The Nepto Dragon is mainly part of it because of the crazy number of people who said they want it in their aquarium ingame (as well as an entire thread here on the forums only for the sake of "let us have the Nepto Dragon in the aquarium!").
As for any "relationship" between the fish - the dev team already said that they do not matter and no fish will attack, eat or fight another fish, even if it would make sense in RL

Lava is opaque. As is sand. So, I really do not know how those could be done other than "durr, its magic!" ...

Sky would not have any "water" or anything in it. Cloud would be a translucent white, I'd guess.

Poison chemicals (found in Azys Lla)? Not a clue ... translucent green with a sort of rainbow sheen?

Chemicals seem the easiest to do out of these, actually, since that really is just water with a green tint.

All others are either solid - and therefore not see-through (sand, lava, etc.) or seem weird to be in aquarium form (flying sky fishes in a tiny box seems even worse than giant fish in a water container, but maybe that's just me).
In the furniture suggestion thread, someone suggested a chandelier/cieling lamp that allows the flying fish to fly around that instead, which seems like a nice idea to me

True true. We're just talking about artificial slices of life for aquariums here though. Salt and freshwater are easy to simulate. Sand fish don't actually seem to require sand to live though, looking through the fishing guide it just seems that they're adapted to move through it and not require much water, so the amount of sand needed for a habitat may not be so much as to obstruct vision while letting the fish live in it. As for lava, well, I'd assume a hot enough facsimile would do? I don't think real life opacity of lava is that important in a fantasy game, considering this game has fishing poles that can wtf fish out of lava in the first place.

Either way! I think it's unfair (er... is that the right term) that only water fish are eligible.

Did I just miss it or didn't we get any new fish with 3.45?
Is it only for full patches? ._.

Next to skyfish, hellfish are probably the easiest to deal with. Lava that looks like cherry Kool-Aid is pretty much a staple of video games, so while it's not very realistic, it's firmly enough wedged in gamer consciousness that it may well still be acceptable. Sandfish do seem the most challenging; making the tank half-full of sand and having the fish surface periodically might be the best way to go.

As for ingredients to stock these tanks, I also kinda want to see "A bucket of molten rock" as a miner gatherable, just because it would be hilarious.

As for fish I'd like to see, there are a lot of awesome aetherochemical fish. I definitely would like to see chemical fish tanks made a priority, along with the more disturbing fish that can be found in Azys Lla.

You didn't miss anything. And I think it's overly optimistic to assume that we'll get new fish every full patch, as well. I'll be surprised (pleasantly so, but still surprised) if we get any new tank fish before Stormblood.

YES YES YES! Awesome thread but you forgot the Seabo! I really want a Seabo.... so cute I love the idea of a slot for the ground so we can have crabs and urchins.

@Lineage: Well, I am fairly certain that in the interview right before aquariums were introduced they said they want to add ~10 fish every patch.

I felt that it was maybe too optimistic to take that as literally every patch and not only full number ones, but..you are crushing my hopes here a little bit xD
If ARR is anything to go by, we only get one more full number patch, 3.5, so at best 1 more batch of fish before Stormblood if any at all? >.<

I hadn't heard the 10-fish-per-patch thing, but if that's a thing they said then perhaps I was being a bit pessimistic in my outlook. Maybe we will get new fish in 3.5! Waiting for SMN Glamours has kept me pretty conservative in when to expect new features. XD

Version 3.5 is special, as well... In a sense, it's actually going to be two major patches, with 3.55 adding the concluding Main Scenario quests, the final relic stage, and so on and so forth - practically a whole new version. It's not impossible that we could see new fish with 3.5 AND 3.55. If we do, though, understand that it's a special case, and that most of the time we would not be getting new fish outside of the major version updates.
