You spawn in with accessories that give +1 to each stat; after that, you get a bunch that give the same defence, with less stat boosts in general; like what's the actual point?

The 'weathered' accessories weren't originally in the game though - they were only added to all new characters starting the game in a recent patch to make it easier for new characters just starting. Originally a new character only started the game with a weapon and racial gear, their belt and accessories slots were empty (although a new character also got a special ring that was determined by how you answered the merchant on the ferry or chocobo carriage).
Hence the vendor/crafted rings from level 1 and above with minor stat increases, they might be more or less obsolete stat wise but they've only just become obsolete recently.
You don't spawn with accessories that give bonus, you only spawn with 4 basic items: Body, Hands, Legs Feet, and none of them has bonus, only basic armor stats. (Unless they changed that but it's been a long time since I've started, so if it is the case then ii'm obviously not aware of it ).
So I assume you must have gotten bonus item from special edition such as Collector or others, which are special cases, and these item can be good and better for a little while than the earlier regular items.
EDIT: Ah Enkidoh replied at the same time and explained it, so it's new feature to help beginners. So nevermind what I just said.

Ah, that makes perfect sense; thank you for that- I was just confused as to why some of the quest reward options, as far as accessories went, seemed so poor, relative to the other options, or what I already had equipped; when do accessories generally start appearing that overtake the recently introduced "newbie accessories"?The 'weathered' accessories weren't originally in the game though - they were only added to all new characters starting the game in a recent patch to make it easier for new characters just starting. There is one quest reward, a ring, that I found substantial. The Brand New Ring you get after completing Hall of tge Novice is +3 to like six stats and increases experience gain for classes level 30 and below.
You cannot take anything for granted, change eventually swallows everything you may try to immortalize.
Around level 20 to 25 the accessoires begin to have +2 (+3 in HQ) on the main stats but they have only STR and DEX or INT and MND. At these level you can start to exchange your accessoires for better ones.
Also this, you can use this ring up to level 40 and higher with no real challenges from other rings.
