    How is damage from proximity AoEs calculated?

    That is, the AoEs that typically show rings expanding from a certain point, indicating to get as far away as possible. For example, Freefire in Praetorium (the crashing ships), comets in a number of instances, Arachne Eve's tunneling moves, etc.

    I know that typically the impact point is lethal, but apparently there can be lethal damage taken from small distances from the impact point (thinking of Arachne Eve here, when webs are placed not far from the center, and the damage drops after a certain distance but doesn't seem to be further reduced if go beyond that (again, thinking of Arachne Eve here).

    I take it these kinds of attacks behave differently? What about comets? In Sohm Al you take damage from 2-3 sources, but apparently in Weeping City you take damage from just one despite the waves from 2-3 extending far?

    Far from sure about this, but a formula that does exactly what you'd expect for proximity damage is:
    base * (1 - distance/max_distance)^x
    Where the x determines how quickly the damage will drop.

    It really depends on the specific mechanic. Every mechanic is balanced for the specific encounter taking in account the arena size.

    Depends if you're a tank though or if you have high defense values. I've seen tanks take the sandpit attack from Arachne Eve right close to the center and survive, whereas if it was a squishier caster or healer, they'd be dead if they're on par with the item level for the encounter.
