What's the point of the FC tag?

Can someone please tell me what the point of the tag is for?

Like the short term besides the name of the FC <tag>.

It's a way of informing other players the name of the FC that player belongs to, without causing too much visual clutter in the nameplate (FFXIV 1.0 and FFXI did something similar with linkshells, with a stylized crest and a coloured linkshell icon beside the player's name respectively). It's a way of showing that player belongs to a FC, and lets other players know it's name (or rather, an abbreviation).

I'd actually prefer the crest next to my name. Dunno why theyou never did that from the start
