How to spot houses set to be demolished?

I'm looking to buy a house for my FC, but I'm not sure if there a way to look and see which houses are no longer in use. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

It's not possible to tell, there's no visual countdown to anyone but the owner. If you see the owner on the server then there's a fair chance it probably won't be demolished any time soon, but that's not definite if they want it to demolish. Other than that it's just keep checking every hour.

You can check if a plot is currently open at the aetheryte plaza in Gridania (for Lavender Beds plots), Limsa Lominsa (for Mist plots), and Ul'dah (for Goblet plots) by selecting the residential area teleport option on the large aetheryte, then selecting each ward and looking through all the plots. If a plot is available for purchase, it will show a price instead of an owner's name. Other than that, it's as worldofneil said above, there's no way to check which ones are slated for demolition, only a way to see if one has already been demolished or relinquished and is currently available for purchase.

Well, technically all houses are set to be demolished any time the owner isn't in them. In most cases, that countdown will be halted by the owner's entrance before it reaches 0, though, so most houses awaiting demolition won't actually get there. That's why the system can't tell us in advance what houses will be demolished. It doesn't know until it happens, since until then, the owner can still halt/reset the timer.

Stalk the plot. Stand out in front of the yard. Haunt the owner's Lodestone for evidence of life.

Yes what I did before the first housing demolition time was look up all the medium plots in the zones I liked. Check the owner on lodestone--found a large number that were 50s only no 60s, or checked for 1 person FCs with the leader in the same only 50s state. Suspected they hadn't played since the expansion dropped and would be candidates for demolition. Wrote down what class the were on. Checked back every couple of days for signs of life (class change, gear change, level up) and scratched a few off the list -- some were still active, but probably never bought HW).

Staked out my first choice, checked hourly on the day the houses were set to be demolished, and got it.

This time its hard since its been rolling and you won't see only 50s as inactive players. Check for only 3.2? gear or older showing? Don't remember when exactly they stopped the timer to know what the threshold should be.
