Would love a mage that uses combos similar to the melees, not dot management, 1 button spamming or proc based, actual combos. If they did this and maybe made it a psychic i might consider playing a mage

I agree, I would love a good magic dps finally.
I try to like BLM and SMN but both playstyles arent that fun to me, BLM with the new 60 skills is a bit too stressful often (for me) and I really dislike the SMN pets.
So a new magic dps would be really great.
I have a better idea.
How about a caster with one spell. That's it. Just one spell. Every other skill it would get would alter the next time that spell is cast in a certain way (i.e. make it a dot, an aoe, make it do triple damage, etc.).
I also left something about a Blue Mage somewhere on these forums.... (#shamelessplug)

They tried that already. Something similar, anyway. People complained that it is too susceptible to lag.
They call it a Ninja, and his spell is the Mudra. He's got 3 signs that he can use in various ways to generate the Ninjutsu he wants, and he casts it by actually casting the Mudra button.
Then they gave it a cooldown that was too long to be the only thing he did in combat, so they made him a DoW class with knife/sword swinging moves. Just to give the player something to do between Mudra casts.

Which in large parts is caused by Ninjutsu (and the mudras) being off-GCD abilities, so you have to weave it in between GCDs - Taking too long to do that causes clipping and thus a DPS loss. You can circumvent that by putting the mudras (or other combo spells, whatever you wanna name them) and put them on the regualar GCD. The ninjutsu (or whatever you wanna call that spell) would then have to be proportionally stronger however. Alternately, you can make it an off-GCD ability whose actual effect depends on the rotational abilities used prior - for example, a full Shadow Fang combo would lead to Suiton, Aeolian Edge combo to Raiton, Armor Crush combo to Fuma etc.
I wouldn't exactly want that to be retrofitted onto ninja, since it wasn't designed like that, but on a new job? I wouldn't mind it at all.
Yup, that's not what I meant. I am well aware of the lag issues that plague Ninjutsu, which is why I suggested one ability (one button, not 2-4 buttons) for each spell modification, so it would be mod, spell, mod, spell or just spam the spell by itself as a filler. Because it's only ONE button that would be oGCD between casts, lag wouldn't be as much of an issue compared to how much it is with Mudras. They tried that already. Something similar, anyway. Think of it like a Summoner throwing a Fester right after a cast, or a Bard letting off a Bloodletter or Misery's End between shots. Same concept here, just that it would happen far more throughout the one-spell rotation.

well i take it that they will make it an int based melee caster, i would hope more range than ninja but ya know. looks like they treat all range the same you get magic range/int and physical range/dex. Its kind of funny, that most of the support these days is all dex, even ninja. maybe they will swippity swap it with rdm and make him lower dmg than ninja but offering support akin to brd mch. As a caster though , melee even, i would like the aoe thing to be good, good aoe, even for a melee. since thats kinda what were missing more than anything outside the very rigid box(besides a medium range [close combat with range]).

whatever they go with rdm as far as roles are concerned, im pretty sure that they will have to integrate it with a unique playstyle if anything thats what everybody whether it be tank, dps or healer are asking for. And RDM under either of these roles should do just that.
if a tank though, i hope they take inspiration from dragon ages arcane warrior mage spec,
