Kiss of the Wasp is +5% damage (+20% with Jugulate changing from 1s Silence to 2s Stun at level 36), and Kiss of the Viper is +10% damage (+20% with Mug changing from item drops up to 50% HP drain at level 40). Which is more or less what Spell Fencer did - increase the damage dealt by applying the effects of spells to their weapons (or add statuses... which, if you want to get nitpicky, can count as a DoT for poison).

It also doesn't change that the concept of sword magic appeared in the series before, including XI. So it isn't really any newer or fresher than Samurai would be. You could say that they could change it up a bit - but hey, couldn't they do that with Samurai, as well? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
