    Garlean Magicks Revisited?

I'm roughly 75% done with my first skimming of the Encyclopædia Eorzea, and I came across an interesting choice of words.

This ocular organ resembles a pearl, and grants purebloods superior spatial recognition. Garleans have little inborn ability to manipulate their body's aether, however, and thus the arcane arts have ever eluded all but a few.
I was under the impression that this was one of the few hard stops in Final Fantasy XIV. Pureblood Garleans can't use magicks. Full stop. No ifs, no ands, no buts, no exceptions, do not pass go, do not collect 200MP. No? Or no longer?

Seems like an interesting time to soften up on that... Laying groundwork for something?

"MY TIME HAS COME!" - Every roleplayer that ever thought, well, I need to be a pureblood Garlean royal, but also an archmage, just now.

So Garlean mages are like Jedi minus the galactic-sized sample pool?

    Interesting...

While this might be the case, its also possible she used some form of magitek to simulate the spell.

Such a change could, maybe, open up the option for playable Garleans.

But, this does make me to pause, as well. That's pretty much a total retcon.

I do hope it's groundwork for something new (or at least a new path/source) entirely, whatever this "superior spacial recognition" should bring. Not a fan of retcons, and was looking forward to diving into the potential complexities of magitech.

Far less likely it means playable Garleans, far more likely it means a Garlean Big Bad who can use magic. Varis is already rocking a look akin to Golbez...

To nobody's surprise - here at least - I'd likely pass out from excitement if we ever get Garleans as a playable race. Or just an updated character creation system so it's easier to design a character that looks like one.

It opens up a lot of possibilities even if they don't go down that route though.

Honestly that would be a rather moot point. Garlean Magitek has for the most part matched any magic we have seen thus far. I cant see a Garlean using magic being much more of a threat than one who just uses Magitek.

I have a feeling that 5.0 will end up being a expansion cycle you really enjoy. :P The way things are going I think its almost certain that at some point we will be getting to know some Garleans we can work with.

That said, I think for a while at least, the Garlean empire will most definitely still be antagonists.

Yeah. Chances are Garlemald is going to be heavily involved in future expansions too - since even after Ala Mhigo we'll still see them around elsewhere. Presumably, anyway. The lore book pretty much confirmed a lot of my headcanon and gave them sympathetic reasoning for their actions. Not going to get into the whole debate of whether or not they're justified but it certainly explains why they do what they do. Fitting a Garlean into the MSQ's is tricky but if they're a defector/mercenary/adventurer it's far easier to handwave it. They already shoehorned Au Ra into the MSQ's and any new race they put forward will have to be done similarly anyway.
