I actually hate that mechanic, especially if it isn't even death directly.
FFX, when you invade Bevelle, you cut through like 10+ enemies all wielding guns,, but then you reach the top and it's a cut scene where they point guns at you so you can't do anything


Death being treated differently in cutscenes is stupid, but what do you want? For no one to ever die, and nothing to ever threaten you since you're overleveled? That would be pretty limiting to the story.
There are some RPGs, like Arcana for SNES, where any (human) in the party dying is an immediate game over. That's one solution, albeit one that wouldn't work in an MMO.
