Meh .. I just take stuff off of my retainers. I send them out for materials while I'm crafting or running dungeons or whatever else I'm doing. This converts the cost of materials from time or gil into ventures, which take little enough time to obtain (craft GC hand ins for a day, get enough GC Seals to get ventures for several days).

Opportunity cost is a thing, but lets face it - if you consider opportunity cost at all, making scrip hand in items is a waste of time and money. You would be better off selling the hq stuff you craft, or possibly just the materials for that stuff, and buying the finished stuff you want to make that involve bcs materials. That suggests that opportunity cost is not the deciding factor here.
